Mammoth ivory comes from the wooly mammoth--which has been extinct for over 10,000-25,000 years--and is being dug up in Siberia, Estonia, Alaska, et.. Of Couse there is a very limited supply and when they can't find any more your investment in this netsuke will go up. These are the "antiques of tommorrow". Mammoth ivory has been used for netsuke and okimonos since the bann on elephant ivory in June 1989. Mammoth ivory has the beautiful cross hatching that elephant ivory has--you need to measure the circles in order to tell one form the other. You can see the cross hatching and circles--like a tree--in many of our photos--particularly on bottoms of netsuke.
Netsuke have netsuke holes for the cords to hold the purses etc. that are hung form the obi--99% are signed by the marvelous carvers.I takes great skill to carve these wonderful little figurines.
The netsuke is solid mammoth ivory--showing the beautiful natural coloring of the ivory.
