One of the biggest competitive issues when purchasing an ozone generator is the ozone output rating in Milligrams Per Hour (mghr or mg/hr). The most important thing to understand is that while mghr is the only fair way to compare the output of an ozone generator, the rating of 1 mghr of ozone output with one company does not always equal the 1 mghr rating with another company. In fact, we often see discrepancies that are over-rated by a large margin; sometimes several hundred percent.
The International Ozone Association (IOA) has an interest in this issue and expects to push ozone generator manufacturers to get a NIST (National Institute of Science and Technology) government accepted standard for mghr ratings. The NIST standard was expected to be in place by now, but as the IOA is a Non-Profit organization, it has been difficult to get the required time allocated from appropriate directors to put towards this issue.

This Ultraviolet UV ozone generator Produces ZERO nitrogen oxides, and the ozone output is unaffected by high humidity (two characteristics not possible with corona discharge ozone generators unless only pure oxygen is used for feed gas). For Example, with just 50% humidity, this unit will produce as much ozone as a corona discharge ozone generator rated at 14,000 mghr, and as some competitors do not rate ozone output conservatively, this unit will exceed the output of many machines rated much higher; even outperforming some rated at 29,000mghr.

An analogy of a corona discharge system and how it is affected by humidity:
Static electricity is a corona discharge;
Most know that when the environment is very dry (as with freezing temperatures in the winter) static electricity discharge is often experienced. But in a warm or humid environment, the static electricity does not happen easily. The same effect is realized for ozone generators using the corona discharge technology. The corona process of an ozone generator is an abundance of controlled static electricity in a box and is greatly affected by the atmospheric humidity (with extreme humidity, for example 85%+ humidity, as much as 80% output is lost with an ambient air corona discharge ozone generator. Humidity reduces corona discharge activity.
Regardless of claims, all corona discharge ambient air ozone generators are rated in a dry environment below 10% humidity. This is because some users, such as those in Arizona and other dry or desert areas will experience the maximum output from their corona discharge ozone generators in these areas because of the ultra-low humidity conditions, which is often in the single digits.

SHOCK TREATMENTS
|
Ozone Shock Treatments are effective for removing harsh odors like smoke, mold, and animal odors. It is useful to "shock treat" an unoccupied room with a large volume of ozone to kill odors & germs.
The idea of an ozone shock treatment procedure is to eliminate the contamination and source of the odor from surfaces as well as the air.
Ozone shock treatments can also provide continuous control over recurring contamination or heavily contaminated areas. |
General Ozone Shock Treatment Procedure:
First the extent of the odor problem or level of contamination needs to be evaluated. This will determine the size of the ozone generator required to sufficiently eliminate the problem odor in a reasonable amount of time. A powerful ozone generator should be used for shock treatments. The high concentration of ozone is needed to kill mold and bacteria.
The ozone generator should be placed pointing in the direction of the problem area. Strong fans should be placed throughout the area being treated to provide maximum ozone distribution and improved penetration into materials such as carpet.
Operate the ozone generator at it's highest capacity for as long as it takes to eliminate the odor problem. In most cases it takes only a few minutes to do a shock treatment. If it is a type of odor that is absorbed in furniture, walls and bedding, for example, cigarette smoke, takes only 30-120 minutes with the proper sized ozone generator.
After the shock treatment procedure is complete, air out the room, if the odor is expected to continue place an ozone generator and monitor controller permanently in the area operating at a low level. Severe cases may require a 24 + hour treatment. Milder cases may need a smaller unit or use lower output setting.
If your goal is to reduce or eliminate a toxic contamination, mold, bacteria, etc. a test should be performed to ensure that the application was successful.

To do this, an unoccupied zone should be established with no air infiltration; no leaks through ventilation systems, windows, or doors. Also, by sealing the area, you can be sure the shock treatment will be successful. |
