| Due to many requests we have decided to offer a complete axial flux wind turbine kit. This machine is of our own design but very similar and very much inspired by Hugh Piggotts designs. The design is such that most folks with even limited mechanical / wood working skills should be able to maintain, repair or even fabricate parts for the machine. All of the detail about how we build the machine is available free (it's slighly out dated but very similar) here: otherpower.com/turbineplans.html. The turbine is manufactured here in our off grid shop mostly with wind and solar power. We have been building wind turbines along this design now for several years and feel that, if properly installed and maintained - it is an efficient, very quiet and extremely reliable machine. This is not a toy turbine like many here on ebay, and it's not made in China. If you have problems we offer free information so that you can make repairs/adjustments yourself, or we can offer support directly. There's nothing more fun than buying an inexpensive wind turbine from overseas only to find out that support is non-existant, or buying a wind turbine from a major manufacturer and finding out down the road that the model is discontinued and replacement parts are no longer available! There is no part on this machine that cannot be repaired, or replaced with fairly simple tools and a bit of time. This machine is ready to go on your tower top with the
exception of a little wood finishing and a bit of assembly. Included is the assembled alternator, blades, tail vane, all necessary hardware to assemble the machine, and a USERS MANUAL. All that remains for you to do is apply finish to the wooden parts (blades, blade hubs and tail vane) and assemble the turbine. You will also need to provide your own tower, 3 phase rectifier, diversion regulator and all other parts of the system. This machine is designed to charge batteries, you need to specify when you order if you want it setup for 12, 24, or 48V.
This is a 10 foot diameter turbine conservatively rated at 800 Watts, although the alternator has proven to withstand sustained output of 1000 Watts in bench testing. The blades are beautifully hand carved from Western Red Cedar, they are the same blades we sell here. All of the holes are drilled in the blades and the hub so assembly is simple and straight forward. Once the blades are finished, and assembled - you will need to balance them on the wind turbine.
All of the metal work is powder coated. When we build the machine, we first powder coat the magnet rotors and all the rest of the metal work. We put 12 2 inch diameter x 1/2 inch thick magnets on each rotor and then band the rotors with stainless steel and cast vinyl ester resin mixed with alumina trihydrate and chopped fiberglass around the magnets. The alternator runs on a common trailer hub which utilizes very common/inexpensive tapered roller bearings. We rate this machine between 800 - 900 Watts. Such ratings mean very little though. You may see other much smaller, less expensive machines with similar ratings - it means nothing. You get what you pay for! What matters is swept area, or blade diameter. This 10 foot diameter turbine sweeps about 80 square feet, 4 times that of a 5 foot diameter machine! This directly translates into 4 times the energy. We rate our machine conservatively in relatively low winds between 20 and 25mph.The stator in the machine is the same HD(heavy duty) stator that we sell here, again - you will need to specify your system voltage when you order. This alternator will usually slightly overpower the blades (Stall) and if the machine is very close to the batteries you may need to add resistance to the line to match the load to the power available from the blades. The machine furls to the side in winds over 25 mph limiting the sustained output to about 800 Watts. You can add a bit more weight to the tail if you require more power in higher winds but we prefer to keep things slow and cool running. Most of your energy is available in lighter/average winds so we don't get so worried about 'peak' output.
A wind power system is a significant investment so be sure that you realize what you are getting into before you get in too deep. We have a Users Manual that you can either buy here, or down load free HERE. You should read this users manual before you buy - it contains a lot of useful information about the machine and the rest of the system. Hopefully if you are considering this purchase you have a good understanding of renewable energy systems, wind power, and the basic design of this machine. If you do not have a good understanding of this stuff, please take some time to read our Otherpower.com website. Check out Dan Finks articles HERE, HERE, and HERE. And again - be sure you either purchase, or download the USERS MANUAL before you buy. This item ships in 3 boxes, it is large and heavy. It will usually ship via UPS ground and at this time we will only ship the complete wind turbine kit to the US or Canada. If you are not within the US or Canada please email us before you order and we will discuss shipping options. We build these to order so please plan on 2 - 4 weeks for delivery. I have also created an ebay guide about wind power basics. Check that out HERE.
