Set SPA37101 or SPA018 (dang I hate these number changes!) contains 2 fine pewter figures: a Centurion and an Aquilifer (eagle bearer) so you get an officer and a flagbearer in effect.
Originally designed for our Spartacus series of toy soldiers (see photo of box with art from the film), these Romans are made of fine pewter( deemed to be lead free) , individually hand painted, wrapped in tissue and then elegantly & safely ensconced inside an ingenious foam insert which protects the figures and is specially cut to fit the 'outline" of the particular pose. These Sets may have either "SPA" or "SPQR" numbers on the various paper inserts or tent cards( folding things which dealers like to write prices on or) which collectors put on shelves next to the figure sets for display purposes. While these sets may have been sold with our Spartacus range, it should be noted that the costuming is historically accurate rather than attempting to match the Roman costumes seen in the film. Interestingly, when Spartacus was filmed less was known about Roman armor than what was learned with archaelogical finds a few years later in Britain and in Germany. Said another way, when Conte set out to make Romans for the Spartacus 'scenario" we elected/opted to make their uniforms and armor accurate historically rather than attempt to match the beautiful but historically inaccurate costumes shown on the Legion in the epic film!
Our Romans are perfect for all sorts of campaigns throughout the Empire and you may not know that we have produced a large & successful range of Barbarians to do combat....these may be seen at www.conteco.com. If you are new to Conte, you are about to commence a lifelong collecting experience with an American owned & operated(one of the few) toy soldier company actually operated by honest to goodness citizens of the USA...sadly, we have become something of a rarity as most toy soldier companies are npw owned & operated out of Asia.
If you are looking for great sculpting, tremdendous implied animation, wonderful painting, collectible packaging, we think you've come to the right place. Importantly, Conte figures are NOT lead figures like those made by most toy soldier companies..these are are fine pewter which is deemed 99.5% lead free and therefore more likely to withstand the rigors of time and aging which generally take a negative toll on lead figures.......not to mention safety issues!
