click pictures to enlarge Name: "CHINESE HORSE" PICTOGRAPH Time: c. 15,000 BC Location: Lascaux Cave, Montignac, France STORY This beautifully crafted wall plaque is a replica of the original pictograph found in the Lascaux Cave. The ancient horse is called "Chinese" because of it's resemblance to 3,000 year old Sung dynasty horse paintings. A pictograph refers to painted (as opposed to carved) representations created by our pre-historic ancestors. The lovely painted horse, represented in our exclusive full size recreation, was found painted on the calcite covered ceiling of the so called 'Axial Gallery' deep within the subterranean tunnels of the cave. The artist painted by flickering fire light, using handmade paint consisting of ground pigments combined with animal fat. The paint was applied directly to the wall, or, in some cases, blown through hollow reeds for special effects. The delicate execution of the painting and its remote underground location suggest the artist wanted the work to be protected and survive. It remained hidden until the cave was discovered by children and explored in the 1940s.
Scientists think that the Lascaux carvings and paintings were created by the same group of artists over a fairly brief span of time. Some believe that the art is meant as a story; others feel the cave was an ancient place of worship. Although the art is ageless, its real purpose may never be known.

REPRODUCTION The original work is located in the Lascaux Cave in France which has been closed to the public since 1963. The recreation was produced by Artists archeologists in the United States from photographs and measurements of the original piece. Using this information, all the intricate details of the painting and the rock wall were carefully carved onto a full-size master. Every effort was made to make the recreation as accurate as possible, including the look and feel of an ancient stone, and we are proud of the results. This work was performed in conjunction with Echoes In Time and is available no where else.
Share the dream of an ancient artist and allow the beauty of this 17,000 year old art to brighten your cave.
