This was a very good album. Basie's stuff is always better live, and I strongly recommend this one. You get a couple of tracks from "April in Paris" that really come alive in a live setting ("Corner Pocket," "Sweety Cake"). There's some new stuff I hadn't seen before, like the trumpet feature "Pensive Miss," which I really liked. Great versions of "Li'l Darlin" and "Cute." Strong Neal Hefti songs round out the album. My favorite track, though, is the baritone sax feature for Charlie Fowlkes, "Spring is Here" - very rare, great sound. This is thankfully devoid of the standards "One O'Clock Jump" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside;" they aren't bad songs, but they're on every other live Basie album. Coupled with a six dollar price tag, this CD is a must have for any Basie fan.

| | Album notes | Count Basie Orchestra: Count Basie (piano); Marshall Royal, Frank Wess, Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, Charlie Fowlkes (saxophone); Thad Jones, Snooky Young, Wendell Culley, Joe Newman (trumpet); Henry Coker, Al Grey, Benny Powell (trombone); Freddie Green (guitar); Eddie Jones (bass); Sonny Payne (drums). Recorded live in the late 1950s. Digitally remastered by Robert Vosgien. Basie's orchestra was the cream of the musical crop, and with this fresh outfit formed in the 1950s, his sound changed significantly. Cooler and more cosmopolitan than Basie's earlier music, the artistry of the ensemble reigns over the soloist spotlight on this session. A listen to "Fantail" reveals that this trade-off resulted in appreciable rewards. Cool and brilliant, Basie excites the listener with a bravura that rises and plunges like a rollercoaster. "Pensive Miss" showcases the band as a singular instrument and proves that Basie the mighty lion can also purr. These live recordings, many of which are bop-influenced arrangements by Neal Hefti, document the seamless and capable machine Count Basie and his Orchestra was at that time.
| | Editorial reviews | ...The jazz choruses are full of ebullience, and they are carried along by the formidable juggernaut swing of the band. One of the pleasures of this band was it members' enjoyment of one another... JazzTimes (03/01/1993)
