Crocosmia Crocosmiiflora

"Lucifer"

South African Iris

You receive 50 organically grown seeds.

Harvested fresh for the 2009 growing season

Crocosmia reproduces freely and quickly

I started this bed of Lucifer with 4 corms that I purchased just 3 years ago!

They spread rapidly by seed as well as producing bulblets from the main corm.

These are a deep scarlet red. Darker than in the photos as the photos have sunlight showing through the blooms

These are grown in my garden and are fresh for this year's growing season

A favorite for generations, crocosmia can still be seen in older gardens where they have spread freely, producing flowers 1 1/2" to 3" across on 4-6 ft. stems. . Native to tropical and southern Africa. Sword-shaped leaves in basal clumps. Similar growing habit to glads. Plant in well-drained, enriched soil. Set corms 2" deep, 3" apart. Where winter temperatures remain above 10 degrees F, they need no winter protection. Where lows range from 10 to -5, provide winter mulch. In colder areas, dig and store over winter.

A member of the iris family, this plant produces numerous red-orange flowers on stems from mid to late summer. Hummingbirds love this plant.Does best in moderately fertile soil, rich in organic matter. Mulch well in colder regions. Divide in the spring just before growth begins.

The American Horticulture Society ranks this as one of the top 75 plants for the garden.

Questions and answers about this item

Q: Hi! If I purchase now, when would I plant? Thanks! Karen
A: It kind of depends where you live. In nature, they are dropping their seeds now, so technically the time to plant would be now. If you get a hard freeze, then maybe I would wait until spring.

Q: Hi! Can I keep these seeds for plant next spring? How do I store? Thanks! Karen
A: Yes, you can as they won't grow until spring anyways. I would store in a cool dry dark spot thanks

Q: Hi! Have you ever grown these from seed? If so, do the seeds grown in to corms? Thanks! Karen
A: The seeds grow in to a long stem that looks rather like a thick blade of grass with a root on the end of it. Each year the bottom part swells more and more until it turns in to a corm. Then the corms will also grow new corms.... Continue reading

Q: Shelley, I am interested in the corms or you mentioned "bulbets" I think is the word you used. Do you have any available, if so for how much? I know that they cannot be planted until the spring, I am just concerned... Continue reading
A: Hi, right now I only have seeds. I won't have corms until fall when I dig the plants. They are just finishing blooming right now, so it will be at least a couple months before I have freshly dug corms. I will list them... Continue reading

Q: I would love to buy some of your seeds, but could you tell me if all your sales to Australia come through with out any problems? No customs confiscations? Regards Julie
A: So far I have not had anyone tell me their seeds were confiscated. I did have one person ask me not to ship her seeds because she had something else confiscated. I sell a lot of international and so far so good. I usually... Continue reading
