Coming from the left, this trenchant analysis of what the author sees as the Bush regime's betrayal of American ideals is by Mark Crispin Miller, whose BUSH DYSLEXICON analyzed the language of George W. in 2001. Here he takes a look at the first presidential term of "Bush & Co." and provides examples of language and behavior that reveal a pattern of vindictiveness, bullying, lying, and worse. Miller has a "the emperor has no clothes" view of Bush, as he revisits the infamous May, 2003, aircraft carrier photo-op in which a militarily begarbed Bush declared "Mission accomplished" in Iraq, and presents evidence that reveals the extent to which Bush has underfunded and undersupplied the forces in the field. He also asserts that the homeland is no more secure today than it was before 9/11. Far more than a mere list of complaints however, CRUEL AND UNUSUAL argues that Bush is not what he seems, and that he is actually a very dangerous man--or at least contrary to the ideals of the Founding Fathers. Miller argues that Bush is not, as he is often portrayed, a centrist, and often betrays traditionally conservative positions, especially regarding the issues of a big government and centralized power. As he did in THE BUSH DYSLEXICON, Miller uses Bush's own language against him--particularly his "you are either with us or against us" rhetoric--not to merely mock, but to discern the agenda behind it, seeing some of his speech as coded to appeal to a narrow religious fundamentalist audience. In Miller's Orwellian stance, language and politics merge to reveal Bush as a "fundamentally apocalyptic" man.
