ABOUT ME

Like you, I'm a dedicated CD collector and audiophile. Every week, I will be listing dozens of rare and collectable CDs, Gold CDs, Super Audio CDs and other discs of note. Add me to your Favorite Sellers list and check in with me every week to see the latest offerings.

ABOUT THIS CD

Like many early CDs, this one was pressed in Japan for the American market. Back in those days, there weren't yet any CD pressing plants here in the USA, so early CDs were pressed either in Japan or West Germany. In many cases, the CDs I sell will be first editions, or the very first time that title ever appeared on CD. Because so few people had CD players way back when, very few of these early CDs were pressed, making them rare and collectable today. In addition to being coveted by collectors, many audiophiles prefer these early CDs, as they have no over-compression (excessive LOUDNESS) or crazy EQ applied like so many modern versions or so-called "remasters".

Also, the quality of the discs themselves is much higher than modern versions, which you can easily see and feel when you hold one of these great old CDs. They are thicker and more sturdy, and have a mirror finish to them. It is believed that the extra care and quality control used at early CD pressing plants also contributes to the increased sound quality of many of these older CDs. Heck, even the old jewel cases are thicker and heavier!

ABOUT MY GRADING

Because I am also a collector, I grade much more strictly than most ebay sellers. We've all bought "excellent" condition discs that turn out to be scratched beyond recognition. I would not do that to my customers.

MINT: As new.
MINT-: A few light, teeny tiny marks visible at close inspection that prevent disc from being called "MINT".
NM: Near Mint. A few light marks, but still a super disc, very clean and highly collectable.
EXC: Excellent. Some small marks/wear and possibly a *small* and *light* scuff. Still very nice, and definitely a collectable quality disc.
VG+. Very Good Plus. A listening copy that plays flawlessly, but has some typical "used CD" marks/wear/scuffs. My "VG+" is far better than most ebay sellers' so-called "excellent".

Album notes
Full performer name: Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention.
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Roy Estrada (vocals, bass); Ray Collins (vocals); Motorhead Sherwood (baritone saxophone, tambourine); Bunk Gardner (alto & tenor saxophones); Ian Underwood (alto & tenor saxophones, piano); Don Preston (piano); Jimmy Carl Black, Arthur Dyer Tripp III (drums).
Recorded at Apostolic Studios, New York, New York.
Having blown the music world's mind with the Mothers, Frank Zappa made a left turn to indulge his childhood love of doo-wop. Recording with the rest of the Mothers, he created CRUISING WITH RUBEN & THE JETS, an album of "greasy love songs and cretin simplicity." It is also an album of authentically performed doo-wop songs that might have even been hits had they been recorded a decade earlier. From the falsetto voice singing of unrequited love, street-corner background harmonies and "Earth Angel"- styled narratives in "Love Of My Life " and "Deseri" to the questionable production values, Zappa accurately recreated the doo-wop sound. In the process, he proved that there was more to his talent than a crude sense of humor.

Editorial reviews
3 Stars - Good - ...this indulges solely the Mothers' affection for doo-wop, re-casting some FREAK OUT! songs in that style alongside originals which intermittently transcend the nostalgia...
