In my 26 years of active practice as a doctor of chiropractic I have treated all types of pains, acute, chronic and traumatic. One accepted rule in the scientific community is that over 95% of all our pains are muscular in origin. Chiropractic is the drugless profession so we treat pain from the holistic approach, which means all things natural.

It is my professional opinion that the inclusion of aromatherapy with hot/cold therapy aids the body in healing and helps create pain relief and relaxation NATURALLY. Herbal Wear can be used for cold (also known as cryotherapy) and for moist heat therapy.

For acute or traumatic pain, cold is the most effective treatment for the first 48 hours and then alternating moist heat is added.

For chronic pain, (chronic is defined as longer than 90 days) moist heat is the rule unless there is a “sharp pain” component. Then it is advised to add ice, preferably before the moist heat. This enables the body to settle down the nerve pain and reduce the inflammation. Then the application of moist heat increases circulation, which carries the body’s healing powers to the injured area and it also promotes muscular relaxation.

Since I began using Herbal Wear in my practice, my patients have been better able to care for themselves and have not had to see me as often.

I have especially found that Herbal Wear has very good results in controlling the pains associated with chronic low back pain, sciatica, tendonitis, fibromyalgia and headaches.

It is well documented that for traumatic pain a mixture of cold and hot treatment is the best treatment. As soon as possible following trauma, you should apply a cold pack or a cold compress to the tender spot several times a day for up to 20 minutes.

After 2 to 3 days of cold treatment, you should apply heat for brief periods to relax muscles and increase blood flow. For chronic pain, hot treatment is preferred. Herbal Wear's products have the diversity to be used as a cold product by placing it in the freezer and they can be used as a hot pack by putting in the microwave.

• When you need Heat make sure it's Moist Heat.

The two most common causes of back pain are sprains and strains.

Strains: Lets say you lifted a heavy objected or had a sudden force applied to your back muscles. What happens is your muscle basically rips, along with the blood vessels within your muscle tissue. Since you probably didn't feel any significant pain right after the injury, you continued doing your heavy lifting. Sure enough, the intense pain comes later, since it takes up to three hours before sufficient blood or irritation sets in. The tear in the muscle tissue is usually followed by pain, swelling and muscle spasms.

Sprains: This is usually associated with the overstretching of one or more ligaments in your back. These ligaments can sometimes have a complete tear.

It is very possible to have both a muscle strain and a ligament sprain at the same time. This is very common with severe falls and car accidents.

Other conditions causing back pain: disc injury, spinal stenosis, pregnancy, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis of the spine.
