As you can see by the picture, this beautiful scene depicts a roadway in New York City, crowded with many horse - driven carriages.

This speedway is said to be along the Harlem River, by students of New York history.

Some excellent and beautiful structures were built during this time. When war with England threatened, Castle Clinton, a circular fort of red sandstone, was built in 1811 on landfill near the west edge of the Battery. Never used as a fort, it was ceded in 1823 to the city, renamed Castle Garden, and served as an entertainment hall for more than 30 years. Although Castle Garden was used primarily for receptions and recitals, occasionally it was the setting for more momentous events, including a rally in 1850 to support the Union and Henry Clay's compromise resolutions in Congress. From 1855 to 1890, Castle Garden was the primary point of entry on the East Coast for immigrants to the United States. Inspired by the London Crystal Palace of 1851, New York built a similar structure the following year for American's first World's Fair entitled "Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations." This remarkable structure of iron and glass stood on the present site of Bryant Park, east of Sixth Avenue between Forty-first and Forty-second streets. Touted as being completely fireproof, because of the building materials used, the New York Crystal Palace was totally destroyed by fire on October 5, 1858. The heat of the fire, which started on the inside, melted the glass and allowed the flames to roar through. No fewer than two thousand persons were estimated to have been in the building at the time but no lives were lost despite the fact that nearly the whole structure burned to the ground in twenty-one minutes. The tall building on the left in this 1853 lithograph is the Latting Observatory, contructed of timber braced with iron and measuring three-hundred feet high - probably the tallest edifice erected in America up to that time. Designed by Waring Latting, it featured a steam elevator to the second landing, where there were telescopes for viewing the panorama of the city. The observatory burned down in 1856. Theatres had clustered primarily around Park Row, Broadway between City Hall and Houston, and on the lower Bowery, but during the 1860s and 1870s, Union Square was the site of the city's first theatre district. A few years earlier, in July 1858, the Palace Garden, a "place of open-air recreation" in the tradition of earlier "pleasure gardens," such as Vauxhall and Niblo's, had opened on 14th Street near Sixth Avenue.

While there were plenty of opportunities, for family, neighbors, and friends, to get together socially, in the country, by way of such activities as raising a barn, husking corn, maple sugaring, and quilting bees, there was really very little reason to get together socially in the city. However, city folk did manage to find a way. They would promenade in elaborate costume on horseback or in carriages , showing off their carriage masterpieces whenever possible.

New York City was well known for this kind of activity, back then, and it still goes on today. The carriages may have changed to cars, but the idea is still the same.

This large-sized, vibrantly colored print, depicting a unique Mid-19th century scene, is disbound from a book aged 50+ years, and is a reprint of the color stone plate, lithographic print. It is beautifully inscribed with its own beautiful title and inscription identical to that in the original lithograph, except it also includes in tiny lettering, "Reprinted from Lithograph by N. Currier & Ives ." This print is so faithful to the original, that it shows even the discoloration, fold lines, etc. of the original. This old print is a nice alternative to an original copy of this print, if you could find one, which you would expect to pay in the hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, depending upon the condition.

A century ago Currier & Ives prints captured an America in mid-passage - it's way of life, news events, customs, methods of travel, its romantic history, even its fashion and humor. The firm of "Currier & Ives" was a New York printmaking firm from 1857 until 1907. Nathaniel Currier was a printmaker and James Ives started as the firm's bookkeeper, and in 1857, became Currier's partner. Neither man was an artist. The prints were drawn and lithographed by other persons. Nathaniel Currier died in 1888 and James Ives died in 1895. The firm carried on until 1907 under the direction of their sons, Edward West Currier and Chauncey Ives. The business of the firm was to produce lithographed prints which were intended to be sold to the general public for picture framing and display in the home or business place. For nearly seventy-five years, the firm provided "Colored Engravings for the People," and called themselves "Printmakers to the People." Currier and Ives gave America a nineteenth-century pictorial history of the country's growth from an agricultural society to an industrialized one. Many newsworthy events were recorded with prints depicting every subject relating to American life: religion, politics, historical figures, views of homes, rural homesteads, sports, music, entertainment, games, life in the home, children, wildlife, hunting, fishing, railroad trains, ships, and many more. Many of the artists that Currier & Ives used are unknown today, and many are more famous artists such as J. E. Butterworth, George H. Durrie, Louis Maurer, Frances or "Fanny" Flora Bond Palmer, Charles Parsons, Napoleon Sarony, and Thomas Worth. Currier & Ives' prints were sold either directly from Currier & Ives' shop in New York or through other printsellers around the United States and overseas. Other printsellers were always eager to carry the latest images because of the quality and variety of Currier & Ives prints. The number of recorded Currier & Ives prints is now over 7,500 different titles, although new titles turn up occasionally all carefully recorded by the American Historical Print Collectors Society in order to maintain a current listing of Currier & Ives prints. They can be found on the internet. Most Currier & Ives prints were hand-colored lithographs, but Currier & Ives also issued some uncolored prints and also chromolithographs. The smaller folio prints which are approximately 8" x 12 1/2" originally sold for about 20 cents each and the medium folio, approximately 10-14" x 14-20" and large folio consisting of prints about 14" x 20," sold for between $1 and $3. It's easy to see why once, these handsome prints graced many American homes. We even occasionally see them on the walls of homes depicted in many older movies. Today they can rarely be seen, except in a few private collections and museums. The most valuable Currier & Ives prints are what are called "Best 50" prints which were judged to be the best, as a result of a study sponsored by the American Historical Print Collectors Society, but collectors should not limit themselves to these prints. It is always desirable to acquire at least one of the "Best 50" prints. My shipping procedures...
A lot of care and expense is put into making sure your prints arrive undamaged. Prints are carefully bagged in plastic sleeves, gently rolled, and mailed in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube. Larger orders and Priority Mail orders are usually shipped flat between sturdy cardboard using creative methods to prevent the USPS from bending or damaging your prints. A large tube mailer may be used for larger prints depending upon what appears to be the safest way to ship. PLEASE BE SURE TO HANDLE YOUR PRINTS WITH CARE TO AVOID DAMAGING THEM WHEN REMOVING THEM FROM THE TUBE OR PACKAGE.

• Paying with PayPal will expedite your order and will allow you to be able to see when your package was shipped and delivered (delivery confirmation). When paying with PayPal, your order will be shipped to the address specify in PayPal when making your payment.
