Tama makes such a beautiful birch shell that, when I ran across one on eBay, I knew immediately that had to be my next project and I am very pleased with the results. I believe I have created a beautiful custom vintage Ludwig/Tama  drum. The birch shell imparts  an extremely sensitive and powerful yet mellow sound with excellent attack and articulation.

It all started with a 6 -ply Tama birch shell. Six small holes for the original leg mounts were dowel filled (Tama apparently used a 4-hole leg mount-see pic) and sanded thoroughly. I finished it with 4 coats of Pecan Poly plus 4 coats of clear Gloss Poly, hand sanding between each coat. I think the results speak for themselves. I estimate that I put about 25 hours into the finish alone! I HAVE BEEN BUILDING CUSTOM DRUMS SINCE 1969 so rest assured that all construction and finishing is done with great care and attention to detail.

Lugs (Ludwig Large Classics), rods and top rim are MINT . The bottom rim has some minor scratches and dings but is in above average condition. The leg mounts are above average Lud. (P/N 1216). However, the eye bolts and nuts are fabricated from stainless steel hardware. The perfectionist will object but they function perfectly (pic). The badge came from a 70's vintage concert tom and is not in the best shape (pic). These details are minor and can be easily replaced. Again, functionality is excellent. Heads are both NEW Ludwig clear single ply.
