Custom Fabric Dyeing service

Custom fabric dyeing service.  Choose from a variety of fabrics and colors.

Please choose:

1. color scheme.  For example, coral/aqua, rich browns, rainbow, purple/rust/mint, etc.

2. dye effect.  Please see pictures for dye effects, and please read the Pictures section below for explanations of the effects.

COLOR MATCHES NOT GUARANTEED.  Two different fabrics dyed in the same bucket on the same day with the same dye batch can come out two different colors. Thus is the way of hand dye.

The price of this item is the Service Fee. Fabric to be paid for separately.

I only dye fabrics that I supply myself. Most commercial fabrics are treated with stain guards or other surface treatments that interfere with dyeing. It is difficult to dye a stain guarded fabric with commercial dyes; it is IMPOSSIBLE to dye stain guarded fabric with natural plant based dyes.

Please allow 3-4 weeks for your custom dye job to be completed.

Please choose either:

1. Commercial Dye. Strong colors, excellent washfastness, any color available.

2. Natural Dye. Faded look colors, recommend washing in plain water without detergent. No true black, red, or purple.  (Grey, pink, and lavender OK).

Please describe the color you want, or snail me a sample.  I recommend against emailing me a color sample, as colors may look different on my computer than on yours.

If you are going for a look inspired by something-- anything from an English country garden to a costume you saw in a movie to a line of poetry-- please do let me know what it is and I will try to achieve that effect.

 Picture 1: Classic Hand Dye (random splashes of color, or, if a monochrome color scheme, random light-to-dark variations).

Picture 2: Gradation (any color or set of colors transitioning into either another color or set of colors, or if a fading gradation, into a paler version of itself). 

Picture 3: Shibori (striped tie dye effect).

Picture 4: Salt Technique (colors warped in odd ways by the use of salt crystals).

Picture 5: Cranberry Bog. 44" wide damask silk jacquard, hand dyed in the greens of the forest reflecting in water rippling in a light breeze, the reflection broken here and there by the reds of wild cranberries growing in the verdant pool.  The jacquard pattern is of serpentine ripples feathering across the pond.

Picture 6:  crazy quilt hearts, made from various of my hand dyed silk fabrics, ribbons, and yarns.

Picure 7: Autumn States: Utah silk habotai. Red rock country, pinon pine, with here and there a touch of aspen leaves, the startling blue of desert sky, and gentle flakes of snow falling among the rock spires.

Picture 8: Autumn States: Utah silk / hemp 3d stripe crepe.  This fabric was dyed in the same batch as Picture 6, note how the 100% silk in picture 6 dyed differently from the silk / hemp blend in picture 7.

Picture 9: Autumn States: California habotai. Classic hand dye.  The rich brown of oak leaves crackling, the forever silence of redwoods, the cheery reds and yellows of the vinyards as the grape leaves turn and fall, revealing the silver-dusted purple wine grapes ready for harvest.  Sunset-violet coastal fog parts to reveal hoary green lichen hanging like beards from the oaks as the acorns drop into the delighted paws of the squirrels and wingbeats drums overhead, unseen flocks hidden by the rain.

Picture 10: Spring Garden 5 momme silk habotai. Gradation.

Picture 11: baker's dozen hand dyed silk scarves.

Picture 12: yarn-dyed crocheted sweater in the Green Flash Sunset colorway.  The yarn is 50% merino wool / 50% raw silk, sport weight.  There are 665 yards to a skein and 7 skeins in this sweater.
