Custom Sunprint 11" x 14" or medium size

Commission a Custom Sunprint by Erin Lale, get exactly the colors, subject, and size you want!

This listing is for a medium sunprint on cotton, with the largest dimension up to 14".  Unframed and unmatted, it will be shipped either in a flat mailer or tube mailer. 

How to order a custom sunprint:

1. Choose subject. Choose A. a sunprint using a drawing or B. a sunprint using plant materials and/or found objects.

A.  Sunprints using drawings.

After you tell me what subject you are interested in, I will email you some photos of sketches.  The sketch will be of an outline that can be cut out to make the sunprint mask.  The sunprint will be a photonegative image of the mask.  If you like one of the sketches, I'll use that one for your sunprint.  If not, I'll make some more sketches.  

B. Sunprints using plant materials and/or found objects.

Choose this option to get a botanical print, still life, or abstract design using flowers/ leaves / found objects.  I can also make shapes, such as runes, symbols, geometric shapes, and words using flowers, leaves, and found objects.  If you have a specific type of plant in mind, inquire as to current availability. 

2. Next, choose your color scheme.  The subject will always be lighter than the background because a sunprint is a photonegative image.  The background is actually the second layer of color, the color of the light-sensitive paint that creates the sunprint. You can choose a monochromatic look (for example, light blue subject, dark blue background), a two color look (for example, yellow subject, blue background), or a multicolor look (lots of lighter colors in the subject, lots of darker colors in the background). 

Choose subject color: red, pink, orange, yellow, light green, light blue, light purple, light brown, gray.  Or multi. You can also choose a flourescent color: fl. yellow, fl. green, fl. blue, fl. pink, fl. orange, fl. lavender.

Choose background color: red, burgundy, dark orange/brown, dark green, dark blue, dark purple, dark brown, dark grey, black.  Or multi.

3. Choose matte or sparkle.  Sunprint paint itself is transparent matte, but I can add sparkle by mixing in pearlescent paints in the first wash.

Please allow up to two weeks for your Custom Sunprint to be ready to ship.  This allows for backlogs, weather conditions (sunprinting requires sun), acquiring requested plant materials (if the kind you want isn't growing in my garden at the time) or objects, time away from the studio at fairs, re-doing sketches at your request, etc.    Each layer of a sunprint takes a full day to print and dry regardless of its size.  All my sunprints have at least 2 layers.

Other artistic considerations:  Some larger designs may have significant underpainting.  While any sunprint can be underpainted to show different subject colors in different areas, some subjects call for underpainting that will be visible through subsequent washes irrespective of the printed design, with matte, pearl, flourescent, or underprinted designs. Very fine detail in the subject is easier to achieve with printing of objects than with printing of paper cutouts. If the object you want printed is difficult to acquire, I may ask you to supply it. I can and have custom grown plants to be sunprinted, but this process takes far longer than eBay allows for handle time, so it is not offered here.  

Custom Sunprint Sizes and Prices:

Small $50 largest dimension 7" or under, such as 5" x 7"

Medium $100 Largest dimension 14" or under, such as 11" x 14"

Large $200 Maximum size 25" x 32", the size of my glass printing plate

Giant $500 Giant sunprints are larger than my printing plate and take special arrangements to make.  For example, Giant Circle types are made on a circular texture surface. Other giant sunprints can include large areas of crackle technique (the canvas is folded during printing) in addition to sunprinted areas.
