Denver & Rio Grande Western #3708 Challenger L-105 4-6-6-4 West Side Models  Brass HO Custom Paint.  American Model Master Gwynne Burch Custrom Painted this model that served on the Rocky Mountain Scenic Route from 1938 through the war into the early 1950’s.  The Rio Grande took delivery of 15 Baldwin built Challengers in two orders.  The first delivery of ten was made during 1938 and the last 5 were delivered during 1942 to help ease the wartime traffic.  The L-105 could develop a tractive effort of 105,000 lbs (hence the L-105 designation) and were equipped with 70 inch drivers and 23X32 cylinders equipped with Walschaert Valve Gearing.  These Whyte class challengers tipped the scales at  620,000 lbs being somewhat lighter that the ALCO L-97 Challengers  although they could develop a bit more tractive effort despite having larger drivers.   The L-105’s proved effective in both passenger and freight service.  The engines did succumb to dieselization beginning in 1951 when many were scrapped including 3705.  The last of the L-105 left service in 1956. The driver palting is intact and the open framed powered model runs well on the test track.   The model comes with  original box without  full foam.  Please allow $15 for insured domestic shipping.
