Burch Custrom Painted this model that served on the Rocky Mountain Scenic Route
from 1938 through the war into the early 1950’s. The Rio Grande took delivery of 15 Baldwin
built Challengers in two orders. The
first delivery of ten was made during 1938 and the last 5 were delivered during
1942 to help ease the wartime traffic.
The L-105 could develop a tractive effort of 105,000 lbs (hence the
L-105 designation) and were equipped with 70 inch drivers and 23X32 cylinders
equipped with Walschaert Valve Gearing.
