While it contains a couple of country outlaw David Allan Coe's best known tunes (the romantic ballad "Would You Lay With Me [in a Field of Stone] and the old-school cheating song "Now I Lay Me Down to Cheat"), the lion's share of Coe's signature tunes are absent from this disc. Nevertheless, BIGGEST HITS does a fine job of representing Coe's multi-faceted talents. Coe's soul side is represented by an energetic version of the Otis Redding classic "Dock of the Bay" and the open-hearted "Take Time to Know Her." The jaunty "London Homesick Blues" is known to many as the Austin City Limits theme song. Coe makes a light-hearted examination of country music lineage on "Hank Williams Junior." There's also a take on "Stand by Your Man" that predates Lyle Lovett's by several years and doesn't hide behind irony. "Juanita" nods broadly in the direction of Jimmy Buffett. These songs may not all be Coe's BIGGEST HITS, but that doesn't mean they're not worthwhile.
