Description:
David Foster earned his solo career the old-fashioned way: by first being in a band (Airplay), then paying his dues through numerous songwriting and production credits. By 1990, the release year of River of Love, Foster's name was a household one, and for that reason, the astounding number of guest artists on this CD is hardly surprising. Mike Reno's lead vocals on "All I Ever Wanted" makes it a Loverboy style power ballad with all the Foster production bells and whistles. The cover of "You're the Voice" is as good as the John Farnham original, sung here by Jeff Pescetto. The L.A. studio big shots are all over this release: Michael Landau, Michael Boddicker, Greg Phillinganes (now in Toto) as well as Toto founder, Steve Lukather. In addition, Bryan Adams, Bruce Hornsby, Timothy B. Schmidt and Bill Champlin add to the overall weight of the project. (Adams sings lead vocals on "River of Love" and backing vox on "One Step Closer".) If Westcoast AOR gets any better than this, let me know. Otherwise, this CD deserves your high bid for being one of the best smooth melodic platters you'll ever hear. Near MINT throughout.
