DEACCESSIONED Ancient Greek / Cypriot Pottery vessel

An Ancient Greek Hellenistic pottery red-ware vessel of exceptional provenance, dating to the 4th-3rd Century B.C..

The vessel has ring base, wide body and everted lip.  The upper part of the piece is decorated with red-orange glaze whilst the lower area is left unglazed. An incised ring runs just above the mid-point of the body.

Vessels such as this became popular from the Fourth century BC and were used for storage and transportation of foodstuffs. They are found in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Cyprus, where similar pieces are known from the Cesnola Collection.  

Height: 3 7/8 inches.

Condition: Very good condition. Unrestored. Minor chip to rim.

Provenance: A rare museum provenance; de-accessioned from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, original accession number 79.620, Gift of Lt.Col. Jacob F. Baker.
