Hayfork Creek here is an old watercourse, cutting through hardrock gold deposits as well as layers of ancient, gold bearing river gravels. This freed placer gold is then deposited in the sands and gravels in the watercourse and in the gravels on both sides of the river here. Do not forget to prospect the dry sands and gravels here! They were deposited here when the water was higher, and contain gold as well..

We cannot stress enough that there is gold in ALL of the sands here! Dig down to bedrock, then classify and sluice it. Do not forget to crevice. The bottom 6 inches or so right above bedrock is your best bet in most places. Don't take our word for it, gold is where it is found. Below, see that there are many interesting nooks and crannies on this mining claim to hunt. This is a very interesting place, full of places to explore..

Getting here is a beautiful, scenic mountain drive through the Trinity County, Northern California mountains. From Redding, California head West up California Highway 299 until you reach Douglas City, about 30 miles. Go left (south) on California Highway 3 until you reach the community of Hayfork, California. Continue South on Hyampom Road until just a few miles before the community of Hyampom, California. There is a well marked dirt road at Deadmans' Point on the right, drive about 1 mile down to the ''Deadmans' Point #2'' Placer Gold Mining Claim and set up your equipment.
