Up for bid - or immediate purchase if you desire - an ORIGINAL print, taken from the ORIGINAL work, limited to 500 posters, hand numbered and signed BY THE ACTUAL ARTIST, taking the viewer back to March 3rd and 4th of 1974 where a concert took place at Cobo Hall in Detroit which Deep Purple headlined, and which also featured sets by The J. Geils Band and Elf, fronted by Ronnie James Dio.
The mid-60’s through the late 70’s, a wonderful time to be alive. It has no equal in history. Almost two generations of youth, devoted to the God given freedoms granted every human being, as well as strong distaste – mildly put - for those who would limit or even seize these freedoms from us. We are also talking a time of internal searching, self exploration, questioning resulting in complete self-determination, breaking all the rules, all the bounds, and all the laws designed to keep us complacent, obedient and docile to the whims and wills of Washington.
Music was the mainstay, the backbone and guiding force behind the times; the bands, not worshipped as commonly misconceived, were respected and honored as beacons of change, shedding light on the darkness and naivety easily served upon the willing generation before. The posters you’ll be viewing, and hopefully buying, commemorate and bear tribute to this unique “Age Of Awareness”, as well as the bands which played on into the night, night after night, bringing the youth of this nation and others, the apple which would eventually destroy the illusion of Eden. As they once put it, these same bands urged all of us to “crack the cosmic egg”, thereby releasing the potential of all mankind. In many ways it was a contemporary attempt at recapturing “The Age of Enlightenment”, which came 200 years prior, and which changed the world forever.
Every poster is a professional work; the artwork of the era unmistakable; a tribute to the genius of 60’s and 70’s graphic designers. These posters comprise a collection of what was known as “kiosk art”, designed to be placed around college campuses at gathering points. Each one measures 11” by 17”, being the standard size for kiosk art; a few will vary and this will be noted in the auction. They differ from the handbills and fliers of the time in the reproduction work, and the size; more attention to “eye-grabbing” was placed on kiosk art than any other. Faithful to the artists, each print comes from an original work, not some cheeseball mass produced crud from China. Every poster was personally supervised during printing, and will come hand signed and numbered by the particular artist, limited to 500 numbered prints each, afterwhich another series begins and this one will end.
For your consideration, a poster from SERIES 4. This beautiful piece of kiosk art takes you back in time to the days when the infamous “Blackmore Wars” raged in Deep Purple. Ian Gillan had just left Purple, along with Roger Glover; Gillan replaced by David Coverdale, and Glover by Glen Hughes. Burn had been released, some songs of which, if my husbands memory serves, were played at this gig. Regardless, Cobo was a concert which had very special meaning to the artist who created the original work and the prints as well. These are not fantasy concerts held in fantasy locations; THEY ACTUALLY OCCURRED!!! One cool thing which came with the advent of the computer, history is available to all. While you won’t get concert dates, Wikipedia on the web offers a very good compilation of facts on almost every band you can think of! Wikipedia is written by people like you and me who have knowledge of events, or in the case of rock concerts, people who were often, actually thereJ
This is where I will leave off, biding peace and happiness to all of you, but at the same time noting that again it is time for vigilance. Iraq is no Vietnam, its worse. Gather inspiration from your brothers and sisters from the past, and when you know it is right in your heart and soul, do whatever you can to bring about change. ROCK ON!!!
