LE MOT Si la pratique du tatouage remonte a la plus haute antiquite et peut etre dite contemporaine des premieres formes d'organisation sociale, l'introduction du terme qui la designe dans notre langue est relativement recente. C'est le traducteur du Second Voyage de Cook en Oceanie (1772-1775) qui l'emploie pour la premiere fois, en 1778. Il le fait d'ailleurs non sans timidite et, dit-il, parce qu'il n'a trouve nulle part d'equivalent francais au terme anglais tattooing. Il cree le substantif tatouage qui va designer a la fois l'operation du tatouage et le resultat de cette operation. Le verbe tatouer cependant, existait des 1769; on le trouve dans la traduction de Hawkesworth..."

A Very Good- condition book; no torn or missing pages; no writing or marks in the text; no ownership markings; light browning to paper of text pages, not affecting plates. Original paper covered boards with black lettering on front board and spine; spine has been neatly reattached at spine edges with archival glue; small bump on front board; browning to upper edges. Original dust jacket in Poor condition housed in protective mylar sleeve; scattered wear, creases and edge tears along edges with loss to paper along rear upper edge, area of loss on rear jacket bottom edge and front jacket upper left hand corner; approx. 60% of spine jacket paper missing.
