loosely translated: Tattoos of People.  By Jacques Delarue (Management of the national Security Police Services) and Robert Giraud. Contains 82 photographs with text  +  80 tattoo design illustrations by the author.

Unumbered limited edition of 50, stated on last page: "les tatouages du milieu, premier ouvrage edite sous le signe de la roulotte, a ete acheve d'imprimer le dix juin mil neuf cent cinquante par les maitres imprimeurs arrault et cie a tours.  Cinquante exemplaires tires a part et numerotes de 1 a 50 constituent l'edition originale."

A solid and very attractive copy of this fascinating illustrated book on the medium of tattoo written by Jacques Delarue, Inspector in the French National Police, with Robert Giraud published in Paris 58 years ago.  This intriguing study delves into the history, symbolism, removal of tattoos, tattooing in women, and many other topics accompanied by 82 sharp photographs depicting the elaborate tattoos of men and women dead and alive.  This book features 55 pages of text printed in French, 82 photographs, and 80 figure illustrations.   This first and limited edition book is rare and is not likely to show up for bidding on ebay anytime again soon.

From Chapter I: "Quelques Definitions.  LE MOT Si la pratique du tatouage remonte a la plus haute antiquite et peut etre dite contemporaine des premieres formes d'organisation sociale, l'introduction du terme qui la designe dans notre langue est relativement recente.  C'est le traducteur du Second Voyage de Cook en Oceanie (1772-1775) qui l'emploie pour la premiere fois, en 1778.  Il le fait d'ailleurs non sans timidite et, dit-il, parce qu'il n'a trouve nulle part d'equivalent francais au terme anglais tattooing.  Il cree le substantif tatouage qui va designer a la fois l'operation du tatouage et le resultat de cette operation.  Le verbe tatouer cependant, existait des 1769; on le trouve dans la traduction de Hawkesworth..."

Condition and description of book:

Octavo-sized hardcover book with dust jacket; 55 pages of text printed in French, 82 photographs and 80 figure illustrations.  A Very Good- condition book; no torn or missing pages; no writing or marks in the text; no ownership markings; light browning to paper of text pages, not affecting plates. Original paper covered boards with black lettering on front board and spine; spine has been neatly reattached at spine edges with archival glue; small bump on front board; browning to upper edges.  Original dust jacket in Poor condition housed in protective mylar sleeve; scattered wear, creases and edge tears along edges with loss to paper along rear upper edge, area of loss on rear jacket bottom edge and front jacket upper left hand corner; approx. 60% of spine jacket paper missing.  A solid and very attractive copy of this fascinating illustrated book on the medium of tattoo written by Jacques Delarue, Inspector in the French National Police, with Robert Giraud.
