In 1606 the little Dutch East India Company ship, Duyfken, came upon the coast of Cape York Peninsula. Its skipper, Willem Jansz, went to his grave without knowing that his crew were the first Europeans to land on the shores of the sixth continent. His chart lay undiscovered in the archives for many years.
Nearly 400 years later, a small group of dedicated people set themselves the daunting task of bringing the Duyfken story back to life. They built a replica of the ship, as a gift to the nation on the eve of the millennium, and sought out the stories of the earliest European explorers of the Great South Land.
In Sent Forth a Dove, respected maritime author James Henderson, himself one of the driving forces behind the replica project, reconstructs the fascinating career of this intrepid little ship, tells the story of the building of the replica, and describes his own quest for the Duyfken, which finally took him to the remote corner of Australia where its European history began.
