There are few things Mac Rebennack hasn't accomplished over the course of his music career. He's been a top studio musician on the cutting edge of early rock and roll, a psychedelic gris-gris man as Dr. John the Night Tripper, and a pioneer in the exploration and evolution of New Orleans roots and fruits. An authentic Crescent City piano man, Dr. John is also a gifted songwriter and interpreter of classic materials. Now, with AFTERGLOW, Dr. John has teamed with producer Tommy LiPuma to craft a very personal, expressive work. By delving into the library of classic American songwriters, Dr. John has created a warm, personal, historical overview that rivals Willie Nelson's classic STARDUST for soulful musical literacy.
AFTERGLOW alternates between roadhouse fare and big-band blare--from Don Redman and Louis Jordan to Duke Ellington and Ray Charles--in a series of fine arrangements by John Clayton and Alan Broadbent. And somehow, hovering above it all, is the spirit of that immortal piano man and singer, bluesman Charles Brown. Brown and his guitarist Oscar Moore penned "Tell Me You'll Wait For Me," and amidst tender, mooning strings and undulating, romantic guitar, Dr. John evokes Brown's gentle vocals and coyly understated piano stylings.
"There Must Be A Better World Somewhere," Dr. John's Grammy Award-winning collaboration with the immortal Doc Pomus, was a hit for B.B. King. Here it's treated to a soulful, big-band treatment, as waves of brass talk back to Phil Upchurch'a snaky guitar and Dr. John's slip-slidin' piano. Dr. John's big, oily voice is equal parts Tom Waits and Ray Charles gumbo, and from the ardent whispers of "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)," to the Latin tinge of Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies," to the swaggering shuffle of "I'm Just A Lucky So-And-So," he imbues each song with a timeless after-hours vibe.
