DTs M273 - Golden “Fool’s Gold” Pyrite Crystals in Massive Matrix Specimen
This is an excellent specimen of massive and crystal pyrite. There are hundreds of sharp-edged, interlocking cubes of shiny pyrite crystals on three sides of the specimen. On the top side, there are lots of large, cubic (with slightly rounded edges) pyrite crystals, interlocking, with bright, shiny faces with faint parallel striations on the faces.
This glorious specimen of pyrite measures about 2-3/4" x 1-1/2" x 1" and weighs four ounces and comes from Peru.
Own a piece of Peru for practically peanuts! This is an excellent specimen for any collector.
“Nope! That ain’t gold, you fool!” But, it sure is pretty.
A bit about Pyrite:
Pyrite: iron disulfide, often with substantial amounts of nickel and cobalt (FeS2). Pyrite (from the Greek "pyr") is the well-known "fool's gold"; so called because it is easily mistaken for native gold. In fact, pyrite really can be associated with gold, and thus can be an important gold ore. Pyrite has had commercial importance as a source of sulfur, used in the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Iron may also be produced as a by-product.
