PLOT SUMMARY:
The story of a woman who devotes her youth, love, and wisdom to the task of bettering the lives of her fellow villagers in the face of personal desires for self advancement and material comforts. This universally familiar tension is played out in youthful romance, and a very bitter separation,

PLOT DETAIL:
The story concerns Song Rim, an orphan girl who lives with her younger sister in a remote mountain village. The villagers live in thatched cottages and have no electricity. She is in love with a talented young man called Won Bong. Won Bong is dissatisfied with the limited horizons the village offers and the low standard of living. He wants to move to an urban environment to better himself. He asks Song Rim to go with him, but she refuses. She insists that it is their duty to stay and work to raise the quality of life in their native place, instead of looking elsewhere for easier opportunities. Won Bong remains determined to move to the city in search of a better life. Song Rim will not go with him. So they separate, although they love each other dearly. Song Rim assumes a leading role as village Chairman in organising the villagers into modernising their village, until one day she is buried in an avalanche while trying to rescue a sheep during a storm.

A quarter of a century after his departure, a despairing Won Bong returns to his village with his teenage son. He is in despair because he had discovered the important truth in life that it is impossible for a person ever to find true happiness outside the place where he belongs, just as had been foretold by Song Rim those many years before. Because his departure was viewed as a betrayal by the villagers he left behind, he knows that he is persona non grata in the village, but he wants his son to have the opportunity to live life as it should be lived, as part of the beautiful community to which he rightly belongs. He sends his son on into the village while he remains looking down from the path above. Once his son is out of sight, he sinks to his knees and scoops up handfuls of his native earth and weeps.

The villagers initially welcome his son, but when they discover who his father is, controversy rages as to whether he should be allowed to remain in what is now a thriving little community with tiled roofs on the cottages, electricity, and a fleet of tractors.

This film provides a fascinating glimpse into one of the least understood countries in the world and presents North Korean society as the North Koreans (apparently) see themselves.

COMMENTARY
Similar to many other North Korean films, the propaganda messages that the Party wants to communicate to the people are continuously and strongly emphasized.  In this movie in particular, the messages are:

- Life in rural villages is idyllic and wonderful and the strong sense of community that exists in staying in the place where you were born more than make up for the lack of amenities normally available in the big city.

- People who move to the city are depriving the communities where they were born of their needed talents. This is an act of betrayal to their community.

-  People who choose to move to the city, for the selfish reason of enjoying an easier, amenity-filled life, will never find true happiness and will live to regret their decision.

- People who resist all temptations, make sacrifices, and utterly devote themselves to hard work for the betterment of their communities will end up very highly respected and will experience true happiness

Excellent and interesting movie!!!

BONUS: All buyers will receive a BONUS CD containing North Korean propaganda videos and music!!
