Along with Hall of Famers - Bird, McHale, Archibald, Maxwell, DJ and Parish, the Celtics and Lakers were the 2 marquee teams in the NBA during the 80s.

During his 14-year playing career, Ainge won 2 Championships with Boston (1984, 1986). He ranks third in NBA playoff history for games played (193) and ranks sixth in most three-pointers made (172). Upon his retirement in 1995, Ainge was one of three players in NBA history to make 1,000 or more career three-pointers (1,002), along with Dale Ellis and Reggie Miller.

Ainge was hired as the Executive Director of Basketball Operations for the Celtics. In 2007, he made two bold moves that changed the franchise's fortunes overnight. Ainge traded for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Immediately, the Celtics returned to the ranks of the NBA's elite franchises for the first time since the early 1990s.

Together with Paul Pierce, the new "Big Three" led the Celtics to the NBA's best record (66-16) during the 2007-08 NBA season and eventually captured the championship. It was the most dramatic single-season improvement in league history and earned Ainge the NBA Executive of the Year award.
