Davis Swiss made 17j, Gold Fill case w Knot Lugs

This is a great vintage 1940's man's wristwatch with a 17 jewel Swiss made movement. The brand name on the watch dial is Davis and the 17 jewel Swiss made movement is branded HOGA Watch, Ltd.  Back prior to the mid-1950's many watch companies purchased Swiss movements and then purchased watch cases from some of the then many watch case companies.

This upper case is probably a gold filled but might be Rolled Gold as it is not marked and the bottom is stainless steel. The case was made by Master Watch Case Company who also made fine cases for Hamilton, Elgin, Bulova and many others at that time period. This case is extremely nice looking and has what is called Knot Lugs. Knot because it appears to be rope twisted around a rod where the lugs meet the case. Bulova, Elgin, Longines and many other watch companies used the same or similar designed case. This a nice size case being about 29mm in diameter and approximately 38mm long overall. The case is in great to excellent condition with no apparent deep scratches or wear showing. We also have a Bulova watch with the same case for sale here on eBay also.

I know this watch has not been used as a daily wearer for over 10 years as it has been in my collection for that period of time. It was stored in a case, taken out and wound up on a regular basis to keep it working and then put back into the case. The 17 jewel manual wind mechanical movement is signed HOGA Watch Ltd., which indicated it may have been made for the Canadian or English markets as Ltd., is a standard United Kingdom type of corporate entity no used much in the United States. The movement works perfectly, keeping excellent time.

The dial is showing its age. It appears to have some damage where someone had removed the hands for a cleaning or something and did a poor job of putting them back on. I normally do not try to clean the dials due to the damage one can do but it is still in very good appearance condition. It has a silvered color background with raised gold numbers and markers. The logo Davis, 17 jewels & anti-magnetic is printed in black below the twelve. There is a sub-second dial at the six position and the Swiss logo is at the bottom of the dial. The gold hands appear to be original, in great condition.

The plastic crystal is newly installed. It is fitted with a new lizard grain leather strap made by Kreisler. This watch is in overall very good condition, keeping great time.

Shipping is FREE for US delivery and all international buyers must pay USPS Express Mail International to get the signed receipt required by PayPal.

Please note that the watches we sell, for the most part, are collectible used watches.  Collectible watches are usually between 25 and 100 years old.  As such, they are more for your collection instead of for everyday wear.  Collectible watches are not intended to be daily wearers, they are very nice to wear for formal functions but most collectible watches will not stand up to hard daily wearing for a long time.  They are fragile, beautiful, lovely to wear and look at, but if you drop them they can be destroyed immediately.  They are not waterproof and even daily use can allow water to enter the case.  Most important, they are not designed to keep accurate time like a quartz or electronic watch.  Keeping good time for an antique, used, collectible watch can be as much as plus or minus 15 minutes per day.  Just like all good things, they require care, maintenance and cleaning on a regular basis.  When buying used collectible watches from anyone, unless it states that it was just cleaned, you should assume it needs it.  Also, there is almost nothing you can do to "over wind" a wristwatch.  Many ads on eBay state the watch works but it is just over wound.  Read that as meaning it is broken.  FYI, To overwind a wristwatch means you did it until it broke the mainspring, stem or other gears, it takes that much pressure to do it.  If it is simply wound tight and will not run, it is broken, not over wound.

Please know that we need to be in contact with you within 24 hours of the end of the auction. Please contact us immediately if you do a Buy it Now and do not wish to pay for it immediately and let us know your payment preferences and time table.

The Laube Group sales policies

All of our watches are warranted to be as described when delivered. You have three days to send it back if it is not as described for a full refund including shipping if we make the mistake. We attempt to honestly describe items, unlike many ebay sellers who deliberately leave out things known by them, unknown to you when you bid and then say, sold as is, no returns. You can always return your items to us if we make the mistake or even if you get buyers remorse. You can return the items within 3 business days of delivery for any reason for a refund. If it is simply because you decided you did not want it, you have to pay the shipping both ways and a 20% restocking charge to handle our ebay fees and costs of handling.   All FREE Ship items returned will have an imputed cost of $9.00 for shipping that will be deducted if the item is returned due to Buyers Remorse only.  You can review our feedback and see that The Laube Group does do business in a very ethical manner. In total, we have completed over 40,000 auctions on ebay and have a received a total of only 18 negative feedbacks in all of our ebay selling id's since 1999.

All of our watches sold are used, vintage, collectible watches.  As such they normally do not operate as accurately nor dependably as a new quartz, new electronic or new mechanical wristwatch.  When we say a watch runs, it does not necessarily mean it runs and keeps perfect time.  These watches were, for the most part, not designed to give perfect time when they were originally made.  A loss or gain of up to fifteen minutes per day can be considered good with vintage watches.  Winding them more than one a time a day is sometimes necessary to keep it running all day and sometimes a little thump is needed on the case to get it started again after winding.  These watches also require maintenance in the form of cleaning, oiling and sometimes complete dis-assembly on a regular basis, usually every other year.  Unless we specifiy when a watch was last cleaned or oiled, we have no knowledge of that service for most and you can expect to have to perform it within the next year or so.  This is a normal maintenance operating expense of owning a vintage, used, or rare collectible mechanical watch.  There is no way to avoid this expense and keep your watches working.

These watches are also vulnerable to damage by mishaps.  You can, if you are not careful, break them before you ever wear them if you drop them taking it out of the package.  You can, and will most certainly, break or destroy the balance wheel or springs simply by opening the case, taking the movement out and putting it back into the case wrong.  There is only one correct method of replacing a movement back into these old cases.  If done wrong, can destroy the balance and hairspring every time.  If you hold it wrong, you will destroy it if your fingers press against the wrong part of the watch.  For this reason, we put Do Not Tamper stickers on all of our sold watches before shipping.  There is no possiblity of return for any reason if the Do Not Tamper sticker is removed by you before you return the watch.  That means, if the case is opened, it can only happen by removing the sticker and you can then not return the watch for any reason, even mis-representation because it easy to destroy the movement by doing so, it is easy to switch components by doing so.  It is just not right to open up a case of a mechanical movement watch and then expect the seller to stand behind anything that may have happended to it as a result of that opening.  If you think you do not want one of our watches after getting it, for any reason, do not remove the No Tamper sticker and send it back postmarked within 3 days and we will refund your purchase price per the policy first written above.

If you do a Buy it Now or win at Auction any items, we need to make contact with you within 24 hours from the time you win or purchase the item.  We will make several email connections attemps to contact you, will send you payment instructions and any other items necessary to complete the transaction usually within 1 to 3 hours after the transaction.  We need for you to respond to those attemps within the 24 hour period and either pay or tell us how and will you will be able to pay.  Payment timing is not as critical to us as hearing from you is so that we can verify we do have a real buyer.  We try to always ship within two business days of receipt of payment from the purchaser, unless the payment is a personal check whereby we then ship upon the check clearing both banks.  This is where you would enter any tax instructions.

All Items sold as is unless otherwise specified within the auction description. There are NO manufacturer warranties on items that we sell unless it is specifically stated in the description that the warranty is from the manufacturer. If there is any warranty specified such as warranted to be new, that warranty is backed only by The Laube Group and not by any manufacturer of any item unless specified in the sale description. Each item will have a specified shipping/handling fee and insurance cost associated and shown. All items need to be paid for within 5 business days of end of sale.

Our shipping charges are based upon factors other than just the postage and for shipment within the lower 48 United States. We fully allocate our costs into the shipping charge which includes the cost of the box, wrapping/packaging materials and the cost of labor to perform that task. That is why you may see a $22 shipping charge and the actual shipping cost be only $18 the rest of the cost is in the items above. Please do not ask us to reduce our shipping costs as we cannot do that. If you wish to use your own UPS account number for shipping there will still be a charge involved for the packaging and labor added to the purchase price.

We have an added charge on every shipment for insurance and do not ship items without insurance. You must report damage immediately upon delivery for insurance purposes. If your purchase is damaged in shipping, first notify the delivery company at the time of acceptance if the box is damaged. Contact us immediately upon opening the box, save all of the packing materials and the box. We will issue an RMA to allow you to return the item only after you have contacted the shipping company. All returns must be returned to us within 3 days of delivery receipt, in the same packaging and insured for the purchase price.  Items should therefore be back in our hands within 10 days of your receipt of an item with any problems.  If this item is simply being sent back for a refund with no damage or problems to the item, we must receive it within 10 days of your receipt of the item in the same condition as when we shipped it out.  There may be a 15% restocking fee if the original packaging is opened prior to the item being returned for refund.
