This decorative basket combines natural and dyed pine needles and items collected locally from native trees into a work of art. The "wooden flower" on the bottom of the basket is from the coconut palm, and the small cones on the edge are from the Norfolk Island pine. The stitching and attention to detail are meticulous. The dimensions are 5.5" x 6" across the top x 1.75" high. It is a very unique item made by a local artist on Sanibel Island.
Pine needle basketry is a very old Native American art form in which clusters of pine needles are coiled and stitched together to make various shapped baskets. Contemporary artists have taken these techniques and designs and transformed them into modern artwork.
