Derek J. Hyatt was born in Ilkey, Great Britain in 1931. He is a poet, a teacher, a painter and a printmaker of merit. He was educated at Leeds and the Royal College of Art where he was awarded the Royal Scholar prize in 1955 and the J. Andrew Lloyd scholarship for landscae painting. From 1968 to 1984, he taught at Leeds Polytechnic School of Creative Arts and Design. His paintings, prints and drawings are in a multitude of public and private collections including the University of Leeds, Oxford University, Harvard University, Yale University, the deBeers Collection and New Yorks Museum of Modern Art. Noted as a landscape artist, he has taken the art of landscape painting to the highest plateau of creativity. This lot for your bidding consideration is a color lithograph from 1957. The piece is titled "Spring Garden" in pencil in the middle of the lower margin. The edition, also noted in pencil at the bottom left, is 10/15. The artist pencil signed the piece at the lower right "Derek J. Hyatt - 1957". The sheet measures 30" x 20". The predominant colors are orange, burnt sienna, rose, and olive. The artwork is in good shape for being more than 50 years old. Wish I could say the same about myself. This piece reminds me of the artwork of Hundertwasser. |
