Dining Table Antique Korean Choson Chosun Shoji Doors

We are thrilled to present this most unusual, rare, one-of-a-kind dining table, commissioned around a pair of antique Korean shoji screens of the Choson era.

This table features 2 shoji screens resting within a commissioned iron table base and frame, topped with a custom cut, 1/2' beveled glass.

Architects of the Choson era practiced a comprehensive effort to maintian order and harmony with nature.  The Korean shoji, standing at the edges of external and internal spaces (usually facing inner courtyards) demonstrated that concern with it's simple and open aesthetics.

The traditional materials used in these shoji were rice paper glued over a fine wooden grill.  From the inside, the observer saw only the paper, until the sunlight beaming through the paper revealed the shadow of it's grill pattern.

Now, as a dining table, the grills offer the same effect as they did in their previous incarnation, since light pouring down on the table will reveal the shadow of the grill pattern on the floor beneath, adding another dimension to it's presence.

Given the size of these screens, it  is likely they came from an upper-class family, as commoners would have had much smaller homes.

The Choson dynasty was the last Korean dynasty, and dated from 1392-1910.  It was also known as the Yi Dynasty.

MEASUREMENTS:  the glass top measures 74" by 42" and is built of thick glass, with a 1/2" bevel.

the iron frame measures 67 5/8 long, 36 1/2" wide and 29" high.

Questions and answers about this item
Q: Hello. The ironwork on the structure of this table - is it a dark gray color, reflecting the nature of stainless steel, or is it more a shinier stainless steel. Could you let me know? Many thanks.
A: Hi, Thanks for a good question. The frame is iron, and it is very industrial, raw looking...a very dark gray, really charcoal...very close to black. I hope that helps. Thanks again, Karen Swett Decorator's Exchange
