This “Directorio Telefonico de La Habana – 1958” is a marvelous reproduction of what the Cuban Telephone Company Directory published in 1958 before the tragic transformation from a free economy to a Castro style totalitarianism, centralized economy with misguided economic policies. This telephone book not only attests to Cuba's advanced state of civilization in a pre-Castro society with tens of thousands of private businesses and manufacturers, offering everything under the sun including the most important above all, choice. One could only imagine what this Directory would look like today.
The “White Pages” which states the telephones and addresses with the consent of citizens living in the province.
The “Yellow Pages” consists of all the thousands of businesses that provided goods and services to all.
The “Green Pages” is the section targeting tourists with information regarding facts about Cuba, travel agencies, airlines, hotels and restaurants.
Note: An enduring myth is that Cuba was socially and economically backwards. Despite the widespread acceptance of this view, all available data shows that by 1958, Cuba was already a relatively a well advanced country certainly by Latin American standards and in some cases by world standards. Cuba did need some political advancement in elections, but not this tragic drastic set back both in the economical and political spectrum by the Castro regime. Allow this book to incorporate itself as factual evidence to those who have twisted the truth about pre-Castro Cuba. If purchased as a gift, it will enlighten those who lived that era of prosperity and will amaze those who thought otherwise.
