Don't Cha Know - The Crickets re-issue - Coral 62238 M-

This is a re-issue of the 1960 recording made by the Crickets for Coral records.  It features vocals by David Box and lead and rhythm guitar.  The solo on Peggy Sue Got Married is absolutely inspired.  That is if you consider that he copies the same solo that Buddy Holly did on Peggy Sue note for note but on an acoustic guitar rather than electric.  Regardless, it is a hell of a guitar break for someone so young.  It was recorded on Ausust 11, 1960 -- David Box's seventeenth birthday.  Drums were played by Jerry Allison on this cut and by Ernie Hall on Don't Cha Know which was written by David.  Jerry Allison played acoustic guitar and David played electric.  Bass was by Joe B Mauldin on both sides.   This was the last record that the Crickets cut at Coral as it completed their required songs before ending their contract.  They subsequently moved down the street to Liberty Records where they were later joined by Jerry Naylor Jackson on vocals and Sonny Curtis when he completed his military service.  This is the only song David cut wth the Crickets as he returned to Lubbock in September to complete his high school education at Monterey High School.  Ironically, he was dismissed from Monterey for performing a "vulgar" song at a Monterey High function.  He graduated from Lubbock High School after the incident in 1962.  Less than two years later on October 23, 1964 David Box lost his life in a small plane crash while enroute to a gig near Houston, Texas.  He was 21 years old.
