The North Pole hoax perpetrated by the colossal fraud Frederick Cook, a milkman from Brooklyn, was an international disgrace. For almost 3 months the world was unsure what had happened until his total lack of any proof ruined him. Cook went into hiding for a year. Since history only rewards the first person to achieve a particular goal, you can appreciate the bitterness of the so called "polar controversy." There is interesting historical material on Crook's antics here.
