The letter is a single sheet , folded and written on one half of both sides . Measures 20 cm x 15 cm .
A few tiny spots to paper edges. A 1 cm tear to edge of blank side of page.
 
 
 
Written from his home : Whitley , Surrey ;
 
 
Dear Sir  , I have recieved the verses and I am very much obliged to you for them.  I will get them set up and will send you proofs .  I will be ??? and keep you a set of proofs in outline , also a set of one or two showing the progress of the colour printing on them to the finish.  I will enclose this with a note Miss Greenaway is writing to you .

Edmund Evans became the premier printer of children's illustrated books for this period, publishing 3 of the major children's illustrators still appreciated today : Kate Greenaway , Randolph Caldecott and Walter Crane.
 
Frederick Lampton-Locker was a poet introduced to Greenaway in 1878 by Evans, and asked by him to "Correct a few oddities " in some of her verses for "Under the Window" - her first published work with Evans . For this he received 1/3 of the profits on the book . He continued to work with Evans and Greenaway - usually uncredited - on many of her books , and was a major influence on her life for several years .
 
Under The Window was an instant success and the original print run of 30,000 copies soon sold out - prompting an immediate reprint of another 70,000 copies . An unprecedented demand . 
 
A VERY GOOD copy from this second printing of Under the Window is included with the letter ; Schuster & Engen  201 1b).
