Edward Henry Potthast (1857 - 1927) "No Trespassing!" ink wash on paper, signed, inscribed and signed again verso, offered without reserve.
This is an absolutely charming and exceptionally well executed little sketch. The way the artist has captured the slightly insouciant natuer of the children and the watchful figure in the distance patrolling the fence is quite wonderful - and done with such limited means. It measures about 14.5 x 12cm and as you can see is unframed. It is clearly a sketch for a larger canvas, and there are clues on the back as such. There is an inscription which reads "FINAL CANVAS NO TRESPASSING". It is also signed again on the back, and there are two other inscriptions. One reads "Bathers" and the other "1st idea". I have added a photo of the only image by Potthast I can find entitled "No Trespassing" which clearly shows a similar but by no means identical image. Whether this indicates that this sketch was a plan for another painting of the same name, or whether his idea evolved from this sketch to the final painting I am not sure. It is sigend on the front and also on the back.
Condition is good. It is clearly rather stained and aged, but I am sure that a decent paper restorer would be able to brighten it up nicely. Overall an absolutely charming and characterful study by a very important American Impressionist artist, offered NO RESERVE and even better - postage to the US is FREE!
