WELCOME! There are always so many false rumors swirling around about world famous Zuni artist, Effie Calavaza, and several of them are usually on view somewhere on the internet! For example, you may have heard that's she very ill and in a nursing home. She isn't. You might have heard she’s going blind. She isn’t. You might have even heard that Effie herself is retired or even dead and that her children now make the jewelry under her hallmark. This isn't true, either. Effie still personally makes every piece of fabulous jewelry she sells, and her children make their jewelry under their names and hallmarks, and she's very much alive. And you may have she's dead, She isn't, thank heavens. But what is true, unfortunately, that because her work is so much in demand -- and has been for many years -- that several years ago others began copying her snake designs. Please beware of similar appearing ‘snake’ design jewelry that is purposely made to look like Effie’s work but is not. So if the price appears to be too good to be true, it probably is a knockoff! Here's Effie's smallest version of her classic turquoise buckles, and it's one of her rarely made ladies (or even appropriate for some children) buckles -- an outstanding gift! It features her famous inlaid turquoise-eyed snake winding arounda vert large Sleeping Beauty turquoise nugget stone. This stone is surrounded by hand stamped ancient Zuni mountain sun ray designs along the outer edges. The heavy duty, slightly domed, sand cast buckle is 1 and 1/8th" in height and 1¾" in width. It will accommodate a belt up to an absolute maximum of ¾" in width. In Zuni culture, the snake is symbolic of defiance that gained new significance with westward expansion and subsequent broken treaties in the 19th century which resulted in forced tribal relocations and thousands of deaths. They successfully hid from the U.S. Army and never capitulated to tribal relocation programs.
