Effie Calavaza of Zuni, NM is so famous that all you have to say to say is “Effie” and all serious Natvie American jewelry collectors know immediately who you’re talking about. She’s been making fine jewelry for years and years and many members of her immediate family and their spouses also make fine jewelry as well.

It seems as if every year stories circulate about Effie’s “poor” health or “failing” eyesight. For the umpteenth time in recent years, there's an ebay seller who should know better claiming she's dead. She isn't! While the last couple of years have been sad ones for Effie -- one of her daughters died of diabetes complications -- and though she's advancing in years -- Effie’s health is fine, her eyesight is fine, and she's very much alive and not, contrary to another rumpor, living in a nursing home. In fact, I ran into Effie and her family recently at Genaro's Mexican Restaurant in Gallup so rumors of her death are greatly exaggerated :-).

So she continues to produce her famous snake jewelry. Effie hand cut these five 3/8ths" by 5/16ths" midnight black onyx and stones herself for uniformity for this sandcast bracelet. But, in addition to these great stones and first-rate craftsmanship, perhaps Effie C's most distinguishing jewelry characteristic is her trademark entwined, inlaid snake eyes -- or in this case tiny, hand cut Sleeping Beauty turquoise eyes. These snakes are fully three dimensional, pure sterling silver overlays bonded onto the bracelet, wrapped around each stone and wrapped around each other and the center turquoise stone. Note how their finely detailed tails help decorate the shanks.

In Native American culture, the snake was often used as a symbol of defiance as settlers and the cavalry moved westward, and the government forcibly relocated all southwestern tribes except the Zuni. The Zuni successfully hid from the army for several years thus avoiding the tragedies that other tribes endured during and after their relocations.

Effie completed the decoration of this simple but stunning bracelet by stamping the edges with hand stamped designs that run from shank to shank along both edges. Effie makes quite a variety of sizes and weights in both men’s and ladies bracelets, so if you’re comparing bracelets, make sure you’re comparing truly comparable bracelets.

This lovely cuff style bracelet measures ½" across from terminal to terminal, has an inside measurement of 5¼,” and an easily but carefully adjustable opening gap of 1 and 1/8th.” If your wrist is 6¼" to 6½" in circumference, this will fit you with little or no very careful adjustment og the shanks.

CAVEAT EMPTOR for those of you who care about authenticity. This is a genuine Effie C bracelet purchased in New Mexico, and her authentic hallmark and tribal affiliation are on the back. When buying pieces represented as Effie C., please remember that if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
