Presented for sale is an absolutely fabulous Elgin 10 carat gold filled Art Deco gentlemans' drivers wristwatch dating to 1949 .  The case looks fabulous and the newly restored dial is mint.  Having just been serviced, the movement is running perfectly and keeping time.  The crystal has been replaced and a new strap has been fitted so this fully restored watch has everything done to ensure it looks fabulous and is ready for immediate use.  Signed Elgin in three places, on the dial, case and movement, authenticity is backed by a full money refund guarantee.

This is a drivers' watch with the case is slightly curved to fit the wrist more snugly and lugs which are hinged to wrap around the wrist, enabling the watch to be worn in several positions.  They were designed to be worn on the side of the wrist as well as conventionally on the top (or bottom) of the wrist.  The "edge of the wrist" position was intended to make it easier to tell the time while driving and holding the steering wheel.  Although a novel idea, these "Drivers" watches did not really catch on and consequently were not produced in large quantities. Therefore they are now rare and VERY collectable.

The Elgin signed dial has an antique white finish and looks fabulous, having just been professionally restored to look as new.  Gold coloured Arabic numerals and dots mark the hours and the hands are in very good shape.  A subsidiary seconds dial is located just above the 6 o'clock position and the newly replaced  crystal is clean and clear.

The 10 carat gold filled  Art Deco case is in very good condition with the expected signs of careful use over more than sixty five years but no obvious blemishes of any significance that I could find to highlight.   It measures approximately 50 mm from lug to lug and 22 mm across excluding the crown.  The inside of the cover is signed "Cased and timed by Elgin National Watch Co. 10K Gold Filled".

The cal. 624, 17 jewel Elgin signed movement is clean, running strongly and keeping time.  The watch has just been professionally serviced so it is running perfectly and keeping time. Many newly acquired vintage watches need this work before they can be brought into regular use and as a service can cost £100 or more, please factor in that this work has already been done when bidding. The serial number H360499 dates the watch to 1949.

The watch is fitted with a new brown leather crocodile grain strap.

Art Deco watches are currently experiencing a renaissance with many of my customers buying a vintage watch not only as a collectable investment but also as an eye catching  item of jewellery to wear.  Do not miss the opportunity to bid on this fabulous vintage watch as they rarely come better than this.

Elgin History

The Elgin National Watch Co. was founded in 1864, just after the civil war was coming to a close.  Elgin had a reputation for producing quality, precision timepieces and is probably best known for its "Railroad" watches. From the 1920's through to the 1960's the company produced many different styles of wristwatches to reflect changing trends and tastes.  Elgin's top of the range superior grade watches, produced during the first half of the 20th century were called "Lord and Lady Elgin"; they had heavier jewelled movements, many of which were of near chronometer grade and precision. A large number of these watches were awarded the Elgin Observatory Certificate for "excellence in timekeeping".  Sadly the company ceased trading in the 1960's.

Terms of Sale

We have all of our watches professionally inspected and tested before sale and have them serviced or carry out  other work that is required if they are not running smoothly and keeping reasonable time.  We warrant that the watch you purchase will, when you receive it, be as described in the listing.  We pack our watches very well to avoid damage but very occasionally a problem may occur due to rough treatment in transit.  We will provide you with a no quibble full refund, including postage or we will undertake any repairs that are necessary, if the watch is damaged or if in any other way differs significantly from the description.  If we have not stated that the watch has been serviced you may wish to have this work done particularly if you intend to wear the watch on a daily basis.  On request, we can provide you with details of independent watchmakers to whom you can send your watch for servicing.

We provide comprehensive details of our watches, including very clear photographs taken with a high resolution macro lens which shows detail not visible to the naked eye.  We also invite you to ask questions if there is anything else you need to know.  If you are buying at auction we cannot provide a refund if you decide your watch is too small or you do not like it for some other reason.    Please take care to consider the dimensions of the watch case as if it is a gentlemens’ Art Deco rectangular vintage watch; they were made smaller than contemporary watches.  Do also please bear in mind that your watch has been used so will not be as new and a fault can develop unexpectedly as with any vintage item.
