THE SHIP IS 37" LONG X 29" HIGH X 7" WIDE, HANDCRAFTED FROM SCRATCH FROM HARDWOOD BY A MASTER CRAFTSMAN.  IT'S THEN PAINTED.  THE SHIP IS FULLY ASSEMBLED AND READY FOR DISPLAY WHEN YOU RECEIVE IT.  THE SHIP COMES BOLTED INTO A BEAUTIFUL CHERRY WOOD AND GLASS CASE.

 

ESMERALDA - Esmeralda is the second tallest and longest sailing ship in the world and one of the world’s most magnificent sailing ships.  She has participated in tall ship events throughout the world won the "Cutty Sark" trophy award and has rounded Cape Horn under sail seven times. (one of the most hazardous shipping routes in the world and referred to "the graveyard" for ships).

 

Construction began in Cádiz, Spain, in 1946. She was intended to become Spain's national training ship. During her construction in 1947 the yard in which she was being built suffered catastrophic explosions, which damaged the ship and placed the yard on the brink of bankruptcy. Work on the ship was temporarily halted. In 1950 Chile and Spain entered into negotiations in which Spain offered to repay debts incurred to Chile as a result of the Spanish Civil War in the form of manufactured products, including the not yet completed Esmeralda. Chile accepted the offer and the ship was formally transferred to the ownership of Chile in 1951. Work then continued on the ship. She was finally launched on 12 May 1953 before an audience of 5,000 people.

Her sister ship is the training ship for the Spanish Navy, the schooner Juan Sebastián Elcano (see my J.S. Elcano model). 

Only the highest quality woods like rosewood, ebony, blackwood, mahogany and teak are used in building the model ships. In general, this is how the following woods are used:

Ebony (for blocks and small details)
English Sycamore (for the hull)
Rosewood (for the hull)
Blackwood (for the hull)
Mahogany (for the masts, squares, crow nests)
Cherrywood (for the deck)
Canons, muskets, anchors and other tiny details are made of metal (for decoration)
Sails and rigging lines are made of linen.

The model is handcrafted from scratch by skilled craftsmen and it's built according to scale of the original ship, through original plans or pictures using plank on frame construction. The hull is joined by multi-pieces of dry thin wooden bar together. Inside the hull a special glue is used which helps thin wooden bars stay close to one another and not split, crack or twist when the weather changes. The ship is then painted.  The construction method is entirely by hand and it takes hundreds of man hours to finish by master artisans.
