As you will see from my other auctions I am working my way through a huge trunk of 19th century clothing that has come from an old house in Paris. It has not been touched for well over 100 years and I have simply pulled this wonderful old coat from the trunk to put on a mannequin to list. So, it is just as I found it.
This is such an amazing Paris confection that dates from the late 1800s / early 1900s!!!
This stunning black evening coat or opera cape is trimmed with the softest silk chenille, French jet and has a delicious and totally luscious burgundy silk inner.
It is SUCH a wearable piece and believe me if I could fasten the inner faux waistcoat I would be keeping it!
The main body is a wool/crepe weave in a rich black . The collar can be a high stand up or can be laid flat but when stood high the chenille tumbles around the edges.
The same chenille is at the two shoulders and down the front of the outer flaps.
The faux waistcoat is trimmed with beautiful large faceted French jet beads and is closed with hooks and eyes.
The silk lining is all intact and in wonderful condition and I love the way that when the wind catches the jacket the silk shows at each side.
The inner shows that this is definately an professionally made couture piece and the back of the cape is shaped with darts as is the waistcoat all seamed & fitted.
The faux waistcoat is attached at the back so there are still armholes to place the arms but with no sleeves they are hidden below the cape.
The back of the coat carries an intricate silk passementerie trim that ends in a tumbling chenille "frou frou".
The coat is substantial warm and the inside silk has a waist ribbon.
I have laid the cape flat to measure and I am giving the inner waistcoat sizes as this is the only fitted part as the outer cape is full and free sized.
With the coat laid flat....
Waistcoat underarm to underarm 18" (46cms)
Waistcoat waist 16" (41cms)
Length of outer coat from top of collar to hem 35" (89cms)
Across shoulders ( laid flat) 16" (41cms)
If it is any help the mannequin I am displaying it on measures 34/24/38 and the waistcoat section is a little large on her.
The condition is absolutely amazing with no wear or distressing. The chenille & jet are all intact and the silk inner is solid with no deterioration to the fibres.
A delicious old Paris fashion confection for any collector or costume display.
