Early Pueblo Indian
Polychrome Dough Bowl

Late 19th - Early 20th Century

Fine and early Native American pottery dough bowl, originating from the Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico.

This piece dates to the late 19th or early century and shows signs of ethnographic use.

The bowl has two old collection numbers written on it in ink, covered with a small patch of varnish. One is on the inside and one on the outside. The number reads "50705", possibly a reference to a field collection date of 1905.

Size:

10.25" diameter (at the rim) / 4" tall

This piece is finished with an off-white slip surface and beautifully decorated with traditional hand-painted pueblo abstracted geometric designs painted in brick red and black (actually a very dark brown).

The piece is decorated on both the inside and the outside, as shown in the photographs.

Its original use may have been a dough bowl or some other utilitarian or ceremonial purpose. There is wear to the bottom of the inside, pointing to ethnographic use.

This piece is in excellent ethnographic condition with a very old patina and wear as shown. There are no hairlines or repairs. There are a few very small chips from use and some scratches, etc. to the designs on the surfaces. The photographs represent it accurately.

This bowl was purchased from an old estate here in San Francisco years ago and has been in my own collection since that time.

The price of this piece includes insured shipping within the United States. We are happy to hear from you by e-mail if you have any questions or need more information.
