Album notes
Personnel: Craig Fox (vocals, guitar); Jack Lawrence (vocals, organ, bass guitar); Patrick Keeler (vocals, percussion). Recording information: Le Grand Studio, Detroit, MI (2005). Championed by the White Stripes' Jack White, the Greenhornes were signed to V2 Records after two accomplished indie albums. The buzz on this Ohio garage-rock band was also aided by bassist Patrick Keeler and drummer Jack Lawrence's work with legendary country vocalist Loretta Lynn on her acclaimed, White-produced VAN LEAR ROSE album. Regardless of famous connections, the Greenhornes are impressive on their first V2 release, the EAST GRAND BLUES EP. Produced by likeminded labelmate Brendan Benson, this five-song disc features more studio sheen than past rough-edged Greenhornes offerings, but the group's overall sound remains intact, with Craig Fox's British Invasion-inspired guitar lines and plaintive singing backed by Keeler and Lawrence's tight rhythms and occasional vocal harmonies. Certain songs clearly evoke the Byrds ("I'm Going Away"), the Animals ("Shelter of Your Arms"), and the Kinks ("Pattern Skies"), but the influences don't eclipse the quality of the tunes, which expertly prime listeners for the band's next full-length record.
