Bound in a Most Handsome Moroccan cowhide, the book has French moire silk endleaves, satin book marker, hubbed spines, 22 kt. gold gilding on three edges---in FINE condition. Ernest Hemingway, who lived from 1899-1961, was the son of Dr. Charles Hemingway and Grace--who Hem called the 'bitch' after his father committed suicide in 1929. Hemingway graduated from OAK PARK High School, summered in the family's cabin in northern MICHIGAN, voluntered as an ambulance driver in WORLD WAR I where he was wounded. After the war, he married Hadley Richardson, moved to PARIS, FRANCE, where he wrote and 'hob nobbed' with the American expatriates, prompting GERTRUDE STEIN to label Hemingway and F. Scott FITZGERALD the "lost generation." Ernest's second wife was PAULINE PFEIFFER whose family lived in PIGGOTT, ARKANSAS, where the Pfeiffers owned 60,000 acres of rich, Delta farmland. Pauline's Uncle Gus Pfeiffer financed the FIRST AFRICAN SAFARI---and Ernest dedicated "The Sun Also Rises" to him. In 1940, Hemingway married Martha Gelhorn---to whom he dedicated "For Whom the Bell Tolls." His fourth wife was Mary Walsh. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is Hemingway's MASTERPIECE and was published in 1940, his longest novel, and set in the SPANISH CIVIL WAR. Robert Jordan, an American and based somewhat on Hemingway himself, fights with the Spanish Loyalists. Robert Jordan falls in love with Maria who he meets at the cave hideout of Pablo and Pilar. When Jordan and Maria "made love," he asks her if "the earth moved" and she replied that it did---prompting the Boston Censors to frown and scold and Hemingway's mother to "blush" and ask him to stop writing "trash." Jordan helps ANSELMO blow up the bridge. Hemingway won the NOBEL Prize in 1954 and several PULITZER Prizes, including one for "The Old Man and The Sea." Certainly he is one of America's finest 20th century novelists. FOLKS, this is a MAGNIFICENT volume---EXTREMELY RARE. Buyer pays $6.00 media or $8.50 priority shipping or actual charges world-wide.
