Detailed item info
Movie description
Between 1924 and 1947, Chinese women were banned from immigrating to the United States. Men who had come hoping to send for their families later were stranded. Chinatowns across the country were dying. When the ban was lifted, prosperous men sent their adult sons, who had been allowed as boys to come from China, back to enter into arranged marriages. But when Wah Gay (Victor Wong) sends his son Ben Loy (Russell Wong) back to their native village to marry Mei Oi (Cora Miao), the daughter of his best friend, it's a case of love at first sight. Oddly reminiscent of Michael Corrleone going to Sicily in THE GODFATHER, it's very nicely staged by director Wayne Wang. As he demonstrated in DIM SUM, Wang has a deft feel for the small emotional touches that make characters come alive. When the couple returns to New York's Chinatown, Ben takes a job as the manager of a busy restaurant. The combined pressure of work and his father's insistence that he produce grandchildren causes Ben to become impotent. Soon the neglected Mei Oi finds companionship with Ah Song (Eric Tsang), a slick gambler. When rumors spread within the small, enclosed community where face (i.e., honor) is very important, it precipitates a crisis for everyone, especially the two grandfathers.

Editorial reviews
"...TEA resembles a sort of film noir under glass....It's like a photo album with the pages being precisely turned, one after the other..."

Eat a Bowl Of Tea

From theidirector of The Joy Luck Club andiMaidiin Manhattan.

Ben's wife wants some attention. Ben's boss wants some dedication. Ben's father wants some grandchildren. And Ben just wants a minute to sort it all out in Wayne Wang's gentle comedy, Eat A Bowl of Tea. In New York's Chinatown of the late 1940s, young Ben Loy (Russell Wong), fresh out of the service, has his whole life spread out before him-including a job, an apartment and a marriage arranged by his father (Victor Wong) to the beautiful Mei Oi (Cora Miao). But as eager as the couple is to see what America has to offer them, that's how eager the whole of Chinatown seems to see some first-generation U.S. offspring. And when Ben's celebrated young marriage threatens to crumble in the face of pressure, it's up to him to separate his dreams from his father's, and to find a future for himself and his wife in their new adopted homeland. Directed by Wayne Wang (Maid In Manhattan, The Joy Luck Club), Eat A Bowl of Tea is a charming, warm-hearted film based on the classic underground novel by Louis Chu.
