Elder Berry and Elder Flowers

Active Compounds: Phenolic acids, sterols, flavanoids, micilage, tannins, volatile oil, triterpenes

Background: The elder plant works for many problems such as coughs and colds and arthritis. It was once believed that the Elder Mother lived inside the tree, and it was dangerous to cut the tree because her spirit may become angered. Those who did dare to cut the tree down would recite a poem to ward off her anger. The elder plant grows in Europe and other temperate regions.

Research has shown that flowers from the elder plant work to reduce inflammation. It's also known to help increase sweating in people who use it.

Applications:Ant-inflammatory/Diuretic

Elder berries and flowers are used to treat arthritis and respiratory problems.

Arthritis: Elder flowers are used to increase the production of sweat and urine. They help to remove toxic waste from the bloodstream and improve arthritis.

Allergies: Elder flowers can help to thin the mucus in the respiratory system and releive congestion and allergies.

Fever reduction: Because elder flowers promote sweating, they can help to reduce fever.

Intestines: Elder berries can work as a mild laxative. At the same time they can help relieve diarrhea.

Description:
The elder tree grows as high as 33 feet. It has cream colored flowers, black berries, and green oval shaped leaves. The flowers of the plant should be harvested in the late spring. The berries can be collected in early fall.

Dosage:
As a tincture of the Elder flowers, use 1 tsp with water 3-4 times a day for allergies.

As a decoction of Elder berries, take 100 ml 3 times a day for arthritic pain.

A cream from Elder flowers may be applied to the skin to relieve dryness.

The tablet form can be taken to strengthen the immune system. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the label.
