How do I know if need a Power Cap for my Subwoofer?
If your headlights dim when you have your stereo turned up, you probably need a Power Cap. The Power Cap is a great low-cost solution to get a great high-power sound. If you have a high powered system with a large subwoofer you probably need a Power Cap. It depends on the current needs of your system, the alternator in your car, and the type of music you listen to. Most cars come with an alternator that is designed to provide just enough power for the items that come with the car, and a bit extra in case you add something. But the power needed to drive a large amplifier and bass subwoofer is too much for most electrical systems. Instead of adding an expensive alternator, you might try adding a low-cost power cap. The Power Cap stores up power and releases it just when it's needed (during heavy bass notes). The Power Cap will fill in the power where your electrical system can't.
Do you notice the bass sounds distorted when you play music with a heavy beat? Do you might notice your headlights dim to the beat? These are signs that you are overdraining your electrical system. Before adding a power capacitor, have your electrical system checked out. You might want to check the connections between the alternator and the battery, the ground strap and the battery and the ground strap and the chassis. If everything checks out and you still have dimming headlights then you might try installing a power capacitor. It will provide the amplifiers with the extra current they need and will keep the system voltage from dropping (voltage sag) during heavy bass notes. Those bass notes eat a lot of electric and they put stress on your electrical system. The power caps releases power at the right time to fill in that power exactly when it's needed.
Can I add a larger Alternator, or extra Batteries?
A larger alternator may solve the problem, or it may add it's own problems. It can be very expensive, it may be too big for the installation area, or it might be overkill for your needs. Furthermore, you can damage your car's electrical system if you install the alternator incorrectly. Before you spend big money on alternators, special mountings, or expensive hardware, the Power Cap can be a good low-cost fix for most power needs.
If you add extra batteries without adding a bigger alternator, you can draw too much power from your alternator, and it can put stress or imbalance on your electrical system. That can blow out an alternator. If you add a larger alternator, you can add an extra battery, but you must mount it correctly, away from excess heat, liquids or vibration. It is not easy. Consult an expert if you make any modifications to your car. The important thing in this article is, you may be able to avoid adding expensive complicated hardware like batteries and alternators if you properly add a low-cost Power Cap.
How does the Power Capacitor work?
The power cap acts like an extra battery adding power. It kicks in just when your bass woofer needs extra power. Power capacitors (also called Stiffening Capacitors) are large capacitors that are used to supplement the vehicle's electrical system. This device acts as an electrical storage "buffer". It stores power until needed for high electrical demands such as heavy bass notes. Because the demand for power is so great on heavy musical notes, your electrical system may not be able to keep up. The power capacitor is able to store current and then release it when needed by the stereo system. It delivers this power more quickly than the stock electrical system because the power capacitor has a much lower internal resistance. Power capacitors have two terminals, positive and negative. They are wired with the negative terminal to ground and the positive terminal wired inline with the amplifier's main power lead. Preferably as close as possible to the amplifier. What Size Do You Need?
There is a general rule of 1 Farad per 1,000 watts. Just divide your amplifiers rated RMS power by 1,000 to get the number of Farads you need. Capacitors usually come in 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 Farad ratings (for cylindrical capacitors) and you can connect the capacitors in parallel if you need more capacitance then is available in a single power capacitor. Larger ones are also available in the double digits. These will be in a rectangular chassis and may even be made to look like an amplifier. The price will range between $75 for a generic brand to well over $500 for the larger square chassis units. The capacitor we are selling is good for many car audio systems. If you need more power, you can buy two power caps and wire them together in Parallel. This will give you more power for a larger amp. Safety Warning:
