This dynamic depiction of
a horse race is an original mixed media (pen, ink, watercolor) on paper
by the accomplished Modernist Emil John Hess. It is signed by the
artist in the lower right.
The subdued, washy profile of the horses are stretched out
mid-gallop across the drawing, elongated, capturing the speed of the
magnificent animals! Where there would be cheering spectators, the background is blurred, as if through tunnel vision, all attention is
focused on the riders. Hess's aesthetic and subject
matter has recently been taken up by such contemporary art hot shots as
Daniel Richter, Peter Doig and others, some 50 years since Hess
revealed it to the world. Gestural and hectic, the artist's work has
also challenged the strict divisions between painting and drawing and
reside somewhere in between! Hess's technique - bright washes,
unrestricted line work by now have earned a staple position in
contemporary painting vocabulary, and rightfully so!
Born in 1913, Hess lived & worked primarily in New York City where he died sometime around 2002 or 2003. He is most well-known for painting scenes of New York, such as: Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus, Times Square New Year's Eve, wild dancing people in rapture, New York OTB locales, modern sculpture and horse races. Some of his exhibits include New York's Metropolitan Museum, MoMa and Betty Parsons Gallery.
