Ozone is a natural purifying agent made up of an unstable form of oxygen and is a very strong oxidizer which can kills bacteria and other harmful pathogens and breaks down ammonia and organic waste materials. The ORP (Oxidation, Reduction Potential or Redox) is a measure of the oxidization capacity of water. A low ORP indicates a high (and undesirable) level of organic matter in the water. Excessive ozone will affect the delicate chemical composition of seawater. Therefore, it is preferable if the ORP is monitored and used to determine when ozone should be applied.

ENALY OZAC-PLUS-100 Aquarium ozone generator comes with built-in redox meter/controller with a digital readout and use adjustable set point to turn the ozone on and off automatically. Requires ORP Probe, sold seperately. Depending on the protein skimmer you are using and the application, you may want to use an air pump.

Why an air dryer is necessary ?


Why do you need an air dryer for an ozone generator that is using ambient air gas as its gas resource?

Generally, ozone generators can be feet either by oxygen or dry air. But only the oxygen in the air is useful for ozone generators in converting of feed gas into ozone. In the case of ambient air, the high humidity of the air will cause serious negative affects to ozone generators.

  • Decrease the ozone output greatly.

  • Increase the possibility of generating side-product gases, which may not be favorite.

  • Fog or high humidity in the ozone tube will easily lead to electric failures and will shorten the life time of the ozone cell.

Also an ozone generator without treated gas feeding will pump out all the possible small articles in the air into your treated water and may bring a second pollution.

Be sure to use ozone generator with a carefully treated feeding gas resource to protect yourself and increase the performance of your ozone generator.

What is Ozone Supposed to Accomplish in an Aquarium?

 

Ozone (O3) has been used, for a long time as a disinfectant and as an oxidizer that removes turbidity, algae, odor, color and taste in the municipal drinking water supply. Applying ozone to fresh water, marine and reef aquariums will achieve the following properties:

  • Removal of Micronics solids (1-100 microns) by clumping them together to bigger dimension particles that can be removed by the protein skimmer or activated carbon.
  • Removal of complicated dissolved organics that cannot be handled by ordinary bio-filter. The ozone oxidizes them and breaks them to simple organics that are now available for degradation by heterotrophic bacteria.
  • Reduction of harmful ammonia (NH3-) and nitrite (NO2-) levels by oxidizing them to nitrate (NO3-).
  • Precipitation of metals, such as aluminum.
  • Algae control
  • Destruction of harmful inorganic components, such as sulfides.
  • Degradation of pesticides and detergents.
  • Bacterial disinfections & viral inactivation: 0.4 mg/L at a 4-minute contact time easily kill bacteria and inactivate 99% of viruses.

The advantages of ozone are:

  • Powerful oxidizing agent. Reduces BOD and COD levels.
  • Very rapid reaction time.
  • 5 times more effective as a disinfectant for bacteria and viruses, than Cl2.
  • Requires short contact time.
  • Produces a complete reaction because of its short half-life (20-30 min.)
  • Leaves a beneficial oxygen residual
