Beautiful, hand-painted English leather travel trunk. From the clothing of those in the paintings, the trunk was made between the late 1700's and early 1800's. The chest is painted on the lid and all 4 sides.
The trunk was modified sometime in the past 50 years to open from the front as well as the top. There are brackets inside to hold what I believe were glass shelves, but the shelves are not included. Also, I believe there were small wooden handles added at the time the shelves were installed to pull the doors open from the front, but these are missing as well.
The chest is 53" wide, 33" high and 23" deep.
The trunk has brass bead trim all around the edges and very ornate brass hinges on the lid.
Based on the extravagant detail, and its large size and weight, this trunk obviously belonged to someone who could afford to travel with many personal belongings in great style.
There's a square hole, about one and a half inches square cut into the edge just below the lid in the front on the right side (it shows in the 1st picture). I'm not sure why this was done... perhaps for the lock. I don't know. There are a few scratches, mostly on the lid (shown in the last photo), a few spots where the metal trim is missing, and it definitely needs cleaning, but the condition is generally good. I couldn't find a signature on any of the paintings, but that doesn't mean there isn't one under the dirt.
I'll deliver the trunk free to any location within 200 miles of Paso Robles, CA (which is halfway between Los Angles and San Francisco). Otherwise, shipping costs will be $15 for every 100 highway miles from Paso Robles to your location. For example, Paso Robles, CA to New York, NY is about 2,900 miles, so shipping cost will be $435. If the bidding goes above $5,000 I'll have it delivered anywhere in the U.S. for free. If the bidding goes above $10,000, I'll have it delivered anywhere internationally for free.
