Townsend Glover , American Entomologist , became the first chief entomologist of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1854. This book was personally owned by TOWNSEND GLOVER . It is signed by him in the front of the book.Townsend Glover added his name ,date and location to the title page. This inscription is dated Dec 25, 1855 .Did someone special give it to him for Christmas or was it a gift to himself. ? I did try to research why he was staying at the Stanwix Hall Hotel , but I have not located any details. It also has his personal stamp on sevearl different pages of the book. I think it was rare for a person to have their own name stamp in the early 1800s.

DETAILS ABOUT THE BOOK:
Is in good condition. As you can see by one of the pictures, there is a middle section of the book where some of the pages are coming lose. It would be very easy to fix this, but I thought it would be best for the new owner to decide if they want to fix it or leave it as is.
British Coleoptera Delineated By Spry and Sruckard , Published in 1840 in London by Crofts, 19 , Chancery Lane . This book alone would sell for over $100 , but since it was orginally owned by TOWNSEND GLOVER, there really is no way to put a price tag on it. I think this is what the ANTIQUE ROADSHOW calls a wonderful provenance.
AUTHORS : Spry and William Edward Shuckard
William Edward Shuckard (1803-1868) was an English bookseller and entomologist . He was also librarian of the Royal Society and translated the
Manual of Entomology ( 1807-1892).He was a specialist in Hymenoptera but worked on Coleoptera in his early years .
I have enjoyed this book very much. But since I am selling it for someone else , it is time to find it a wonderful new home . It would make a great addition to any library . I hope it can be enjoyed by many that would appreciate this wonderful old book.

DETAILS ABOUT THE STANWIX HALL HOTEL , ALBANY , NY :
This book was signed by Townsend Glover on DEC 25 1855 while he was staying in room 71 at the HOTEL , Stanwix Hall in Albany , NY. The following is a bit of history about the STANWIX Hall Hotel that I found on the internet about a STEROSCOPE CARD. - Delevan Peck Prop'r. Corner Broadway and Malden Lane. Small newspaper clipping attached on verso of card: "Stanwix Hall is the name of one of Albany's oldest hotels. It is located at the northeast corner of Broadway and Malden Lane and is under the management of Eugene E. McCandliss. It is an institution of the city, as it were, and is as familiar to state legislators and politicians as the capitol. Many a political course has been determined on within its walls. It continues to be a favorite stopping place for members of the legislature and all through the winter many of them are to be found chatting in its spacious corridors. Stanwix Hall is six stories high and has a frontage on Broadway of sixty feet and a depth on Malden lane of one hundred and twenty-five feet, running through the block from Broadway."
